The basilica is closely associated with the Order of the Visitation, founded in 1610 by Saint Francis de Sales and Saint Jane Frances de Chantal. The bodies of these two saints rest in gilded bronze sarcophagi within the basilica, attracting pilgrims and visitors who hold them in high reverence. Their remains were ceremoniously transferred to the basilica on August 2, 1911, in a grand procession attended by a large crowd of Annecy's faithful.
