Michaeliskirche

Michaeliskirche Bautzen

Michaeliskirche

Nestled in the heart of Bautzen, the Michaeliskirche stands as a beacon of history and spirituality, overlooking the charming Altstadt with an air of quiet dignity. This remarkable church, a symbol of resilience and faith, has been a spiritual home for the Sorbian community since the 17th century. Its storied past and architectural beauty make it a must-visit for anyone exploring the cultural tapestry of Saxony.

The Origins of Michaeliskirche

The roots of Michaeliskirche stretch back to the Hussite Wars in 1429, when Bautzen was besieged from the west. Legend has it that during the fiercest of these battles, the Archangel Michael appeared in the sky, sword in hand, to aid the townspeople in their defense. In gratitude, the citizens of Bautzen built a chapel on this very site, dedicating it to St. Michael. This chapel, first mentioned in 1473, forms the eastern part of the church as we know it today.

By 1495, construction had expanded with the addition of a tower on the south side and a nave to the west. The church's vaulted ceilings and roof were completed around 1520, and from then on, it was known as Michaeliskirche. The church's strategic location near the Alte Wasserkunst and the city walls adds to its historical allure, making it an integral part of Bautzen's cityscape.

A Sanctuary for the Sorbian Community

Following the Reformation, the church stood silent for nearly a century. It wasn't until 1619 that Protestant services, conducted in Sorbian, were permitted in the Kingdom of Bohemia, to which Bautzen belonged at the time. The Michaeliskirche was then established as the parish church for the Protestant Sorbs, with the first service held in September of that year. For over two centuries, the congregation was exclusively Sorbian, a testament to the church's role in preserving Sorbian culture and language.

In 1836, German services were introduced, initially once a month, and eventually became more frequent. Today, the church continues to honor its roots by holding Sorbian services monthly, maintaining its cultural significance in the region.

A Survivor Through the Ages

Michaeliskirche has withstood the test of time, surviving the great city fire of 1634 with only minor damage. Despite housing five tons of gunpowder, the church miraculously avoided destruction. It served as a temporary place of worship for the Petri congregation while their cathedral was rebuilt.

Inside, visitors can admire the 1693 altar crafted by Stöckel and Kanderbach, as well as the organ, consecrated in 1784. A significant renovation in 1892 saw the construction of galleries, the installation of a new Eule organ, and the addition of three new bells. However, these changes were mostly reversed during a comprehensive restoration from 1964 to 1976, which restored the church to its former glory.

Architectural Highlights

The Michaeliskirche's architecture is a harmonious blend of history and artistry. Its sturdy stone walls and elegant tower are quintessential examples of late Gothic design. The church's interior is equally captivating, with its ornate altar and beautifully restored organ offering a glimpse into the past.

The surrounding Wendischer Kirchhof, once a bustling part of Bautzen's city defenses, now serves as a tranquil green space, providing a serene setting for reflection and exploration. Although the church lacks an adjoining cemetery due to space constraints, this area remains a vital link between the Spreetal and the Altstadt.

A Living Legacy

Throughout the years, Michaeliskirche has continued to evolve, adapting to the changing needs of its congregation while preserving its historical essence. The church underwent a significant facelift in 1992 with the installation of a new set of bells, and since 2005, ongoing facade renovations have ensured its enduring beauty.

Michaeliskirche is more than just a church; it is a living monument to the resilience and faith of the Sorbian people. Its walls echo with centuries of history, offering visitors a unique insight into the cultural heritage of Bautzen. Whether you're drawn by its architectural splendor or its rich history, a visit to Michaeliskirche promises an unforgettable journey through time.
