San Martino

San Martino Casalecchio di Reno

San Martino

San Martino, locally known as Chiesa di San Martino, is the cathedral of Casalecchio di Reno, located in the metropolitan city and archdiocese of Bologna. This magnificent church, steeped in history and architectural splendor, is a must-visit destination for anyone exploring the region.

The History of San Martino

The origins of San Martino date back to the 7th century when Martinian monks established a monastery in Casalecchio. This initial structure faced destruction in 974 by invading Hungarians but was rebuilt in 1074. Historical records from 1378 reveal that the church was under the jurisdiction of the pieve (rural church) of Bologna and was part of the Porta Procula district. In 1558, it became a subsidiary of the pieve of Pontecchio and later, in 1570, fell under the pieve of Borgo Panigale.

The church underwent a significant reconstruction in 1665 and was further expanded between 1874 and 1913. However, in the early 20th century, the decision was made to demolish the existing structure to make way for a new church. The original design by Edoardo Collamarini was later modified by Luigi Saccenti, and the new San Martino was constructed between 1926 and 1937. The church was consecrated in 1937 by the Archbishop of Bologna, Giovanni Battista Nasalli Rocca di Corneliano.

The Bell Tower and Bells

To the left of the church stands the striking bell tower, a prominent feature of the San Martino complex. Designed by Luigi Saccenti and completed in 1938, the tower reaches a height of 45 meters, making it one of the most recognizable symbols of Casalecchio di Reno. The bell tower houses a remarkable set of six bells, crafted by Cesare Brighenti of Bologna. With a total weight of 3,074 kilograms, this bell ensemble is the sixth heaviest in the Metropolitan City of Bologna.

The bells are tuned to produce a minor fourth when the four largest are rung together and a major fifth with the five smaller bells. They are mounted on an iron frame with traditional wooden hubs, allowing them to be rung in the distinctive Bolognese style. This technique is showcased during major celebrations and annually on November 11th for the feast of San Martino di Tours, the church's patron saint.

Inside San Martino

The interior of San Martino is a treasure trove of artistic and historical significance. The church features three naves, each adorned with exquisite artworks. One of the most notable pieces is an altarpiece depicting the Blessed Virgin Mary alongside Saints Lucy and Agatha, created by the renowned artist Denijs Calvaert. The church also boasts frescoes by Lambertini and images of the Four Evangelists.

Another highlight is the church's organ, installed in 1989 by Francesco Guglielmo Paccagnella. This instrument adds to the church's rich musical heritage, providing a beautiful accompaniment to the liturgical services held within its walls.

Exploring San Martino

Visitors to San Martino will find themselves immersed in a blend of history, art, and spirituality. The church's exterior, with its warm, earthy tones and elegant architectural lines, invites you to step inside and explore its sacred spaces. The bell tower, with its clock faces on two of its four sides, stands as a sentinel over the church, a reminder of the passage of time and the enduring nature of faith.

Inside, the serene atmosphere is enhanced by the natural light filtering through the windows, illuminating the intricate details of the frescoes and altarpieces. The church's layout, with its three naves, creates a sense of openness and invites contemplation and prayer.

The Community and Events

San Martino is not just a historical monument; it is a living, breathing part of the Casalecchio di Reno community. The church hosts regular masses and religious events, serving as a spiritual hub for local residents. The annual feast of San Martino di Tours is a particularly special occasion, drawing visitors from near and far to celebrate with the community.

The church also plays a role in various cultural and social activities, reflecting its commitment to serving the broader community. Whether you are attending a religious service, a concert, or a community event, San Martino provides a welcoming and inspiring setting.

In conclusion, San Martino in Casalecchio di Reno is a testament to the enduring power of faith, art, and community. Its rich history, stunning architecture, and vibrant community life make it a must-visit destination for anyone exploring the Bologna region. As you walk through its hallowed halls, you will be transported through centuries of history, experiencing the beauty and serenity that have made San Martino a cherished landmark for generations.
