The Town Hall of Chioggia, known locally as Palazzo del Municipio, stands as a magnificent testament to neoclassical architecture on the bustling Corso del Popolo, the main thoroughfare of this charming Venetian town. This grand building not only serves as the administrative heart of Chioggia but also encapsulates a rich history that mirrors the town’s own vibrant past.

The History of the Town Hall

The story of Chioggia’s Town Hall begins with its predecessor, the Palazzo Pretorio, which was constructed in 1228. Unfortunately, this medieval edifice met its demise in 1817 due to a devastating fire. Rising from the ashes, the current Town Hall was designed by the engineer De Paoli in 1828, with construction commencing in October 1839. This new structure was built on the very site of its predecessor, maintaining the historic continuity of civic administration in the heart of Chioggia.

One of the few remnants of the ancient Palazzo Pretorio is the balustrade of the external staircase, which now graces the garden of the episcopal palace beside Chioggia’s Cathedral. Additionally, the clock from the old civic tower was preserved and relocated to the bell tower of the Church of San Andrea, where it continues to mark time as one of the oldest functioning tower clocks in the world.

Architectural Features

The Town Hall’s neoclassical design is both imposing and elegant, characterized by its robust structure supported by a portico and elevated by five steps crafted from Istrian stone. The building's central section boasts a pediment adorned with the city’s coat of arms, flanked by two dolphins—one holding a trident and the other a spade—symbolizing Chioggia’s twin economic pillars of fishing and agriculture.

Flanking the main structure are two towers, each housing a clock and a bell. The southern bell dates back to 1790, while its northern counterpart was added in 1855, further enhancing the building's historical allure.

Exploring the Interior

Inside, visitors are greeted by the grand main staircase, at the center of which stands a bust of the Virgin Mary, attributed to the sculptor Antonio Bonazza. This piece, like many others within the Town Hall, originally came from the nearby convent of the Fathers of the Oratory of Saint Philip Neri.

The Council Chamber, formerly the reception hall, is a treasure trove of art and history. Among its notable pieces is a large canvas depicting The Last Supper by Antonio Vassilacchi, originally from the Church of Santa Croce in Cividale di Belluno. The room also features busts of prominent figures such as Vittorio Emanuele II, crafted by Aristide Naccari, and representations of Eleonora Duse and Giuseppe Veronese, sculpted by Francesco Rebesco in the 1950s.

Historical Relics and Courtyards

Under the portico, a series of plaques from the 19th and 20th centuries commemorate various historical events. The central courtyard is home to several ancient inscriptions, the oldest of which dates back to the first century AD, originating from the Tower of Bebbe in the locality of Ca' Pasqua.

The Town Hall complex also includes three internal courtyards, each adorned with ancient wellheads. The central wellhead, dating from 1768, hails from the nearby convent of the Fathers of the Oratory, bearing the emblem of their religious congregation.

The Flagpole and Its Legacy

Outside, the marble base of the flagpole was sculpted in 1713 by Gioseffo Zeminiani. Beneath the telamons supporting the flagstaff is an inscription that speaks to the enduring legacy and civic pride of Chioggia.
