The History of Oud gemeentehuis

Originally opening its doors in 1731 as De Croone, this establishment was more than just an inn; it was the only venue in Deerlijk with an accompanying brewery. Managed by Joseph Monteyne, it provided not only a place to drink but also a place to rest, making it a central fixture in the community. Its significance was such that it was included in a 1779 ordinance by Maria Theresa of Austria, which aimed to regulate inns and taverns in response to rising alcohol consumption.

In the late 18th century, the inn briefly transformed into La Couronne d'Or, serving as a theater for the Associated Lovers of the Redenspreuk. However, it soon reverted to its original name under the ownership of Petrus Vantomme in 1788, continuing its legacy as a beloved local inn.

A Civic Transformation

By 1830, during the Belgian Revolution, De Croone evolved into a gathering place for the local civic guard. It wasn't long before the municipal council relocated here, and thus, it became known as the Gemeentehuis or town hall. This transition marked the beginning of its official role in Deerlijk's administrative history.

The building underwent significant changes in 1893 when Charles Lust, a brewer from Kortrijk, was compelled to sell due to street expansion. Lust proposed to demolish and rebuild the structure at his expense, provided the town council would lease it for 25 years. This agreement led to the construction of a new and improved town hall, complete with council chambers, a jail, and stables for travelers' horses.

The Evolution Continues

Despite its historical significance, the municipal functions moved across the street in 1940 due to new provincial regulations requiring larger facilities for towns with over 1,000 residents. This change marked the end of its tenure as a town hall, and the building returned to its roots as an inn, now named De Kroon.

Throughout the mid-20th century, De Kroon adapted to the times, housing a local socialist cooperative and undergoing renovations to add a banquet hall and office space. In 1991, with new proprietors, it was aptly renamed Oud gemeentehuis, reflecting its storied past.

Architectural Charm

The Oud gemeentehuis is an architectural gem, boasting an eclectic brick façade with a stepped gable and saddle roof. While the windows have been widened and the iron balcony removed, many original elements remain, including decorative ceramic panels and bronze embellishments. Notably, the façade features engravings of Gemeentehuis and the year 1893, along with a stone satyr head above the door, adding to its historic allure.

The building's exterior is further adorned with two bronze stars, two bronze lion heads, and ceramic floral motifs. A wrought iron weather vane atop the gable proudly displays the Deerlijk coat of arms, while architectural details like corbels and a stone satyr head add to its character.

A Modern-Day Landmark

Today, the Oud gemeentehuis remains under the ownership of Brouwerij Haacht, the successor to the Lust Brewery. Although it no longer serves as a municipal building, it continues to be a cherished landmark in Deerlijk, offering a glimpse into the town's rich history and evolving identity.
