Synagogue Dornum

Synagogue Dornum Dornum

Synagogue Dornum

In the quaint town of Dornum, nestled in the picturesque region of Lower Saxony, Germany, stands a monument of profound historical and cultural significance—the Synagogue Dornum. Known locally as Synagoge Dornum, this building is a testament to the rich Jewish heritage that once thrived in this part of East Frisia. Today, it serves as a poignant reminder of the past, offering visitors a glimpse into the life and traditions of the Jewish community that flourished here until the mid-20th century.

The History of Synagogue Dornum

The Synagogue Dornum was constructed in 1841, a period when the Jewish community in Dornum was experiencing growth and prosperity. The community had been using a prayer room in a building on what is now Kirchstraße since around 1730. It is believed that this earlier site might have included a mikveh, or ritual bath, evidenced by a shaft discovered during renovations in 1991.

Built as a single-story brick structure with a hipped roof, the synagogue's design is modest yet elegant. Its dimensions are approximately 7.75 meters in width and 10.5 meters in length, with the main prayer hall measuring 6.80 by 7.30 meters. The interior is marked by a wooden barrel ceiling and stoneware floor tiles, creating a space that is both functional and serene.

For nearly a century, the Synagogue Dornum was the heart of the local Jewish community. However, the rise of the Nazi regime in the 1930s led to a decline in the Jewish population, as many fled due to increasing persecution. By 1938, the synagogue was sold to a local craftsman, August Teßmer, and repurposed as a furniture warehouse. During the infamous November pogroms of 1938, the synagogue was vandalized, and its furnishings were destroyed.

Restoration and Transformation

After World War II, the building continued to serve various commercial purposes until the late 20th century. In 1990, the Förderverein Synagoge Dornum was established with the aim of preserving and restoring the synagogue. With support from local authorities and heritage organizations, extensive restoration work was undertaken, including the reconstruction of the original western façade and the reinstatement of the sandstone inscription bearing Psalm 118:20.

Today, the Synagogue Dornum is not only a restored architectural gem but also a vibrant memorial and museum. The building hosts a permanent exhibition that delves into the history, culture, and religion of the Jewish community in Dornum. Visitors can explore displays that highlight the community's contributions and the challenges they faced over the centuries.
