Casa Amatller

Casa Amatller Eixample

Casa Amatller

Casa Amatller, nestled in the heart of Barcelona’s bustling Passeig de Gràcia, stands as a testament to the city’s rich architectural heritage. This striking building, a masterpiece of the Modernisme movement, was transformed by the visionary architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch between 1898 and 1900. It forms part of the famous Block of Discord, a collection of buildings that showcases the creative rivalry among Catalonia’s most celebrated architects.

The History of Casa Amatller

The story of Casa Amatller begins with Antoni Amatller, a prominent chocolatier whose family business, Chocolate Amatller, was renowned throughout Spain. In 1898, Amatller purchased a relatively plain building on Passeig de Gràcia, a street that had become the epicenter of affluence and modernity in Barcelona. His vision was to transform it into a home that reflected his success and artistic passion.

Entrusting this task to Josep Puig i Cadafalch, Amatller initiated a grand renovation that involved over 50 artisans. The building was entirely reimagined, with Cadafalch infusing it with a blend of Gothic and Flemish influences, creating a unique façade that captivates passersby to this day. The project was a significant investment, costing around a million pesetas, but it resulted in a building that embodied the spirit and creativity of the Modernisme movement.

Exploring Casa Amatller

Visitors to Casa Amatller are greeted by a façade that is both intricate and inviting. The lower level, crafted from Montjuïc stone, is adorned with sculptures by Eusebi Arnau, depicting the legend of Saint George, the dragon slayer. Above, the building’s façade is decorated with ochre-colored sgraffiti, designed to resemble a chocolate bar – a playful nod to Amatller’s profession.

The building’s stepped gable, reminiscent of Flemish architecture, is adorned with colorful tiles and the letter 'A', representing the Amatller family name. This decorative element, combined with the ornate windows and wrought iron balconies, creates a visual feast that draws the eye upwards.

The Interior of Casa Amatller

Inside, Casa Amatller continues to impress with its opulent design. The grand foyer, originally designed to accommodate Amatller’s automobile, features a rotating floor – a marvel of convenience and innovation at the time. The foyer’s flooring, designed by Cadafalch, features a floral motif that has become emblematic of Barcelona’s modernist aesthetic.

The main floor, or Beletage, is a showcase of artistic craftsmanship. The ceilings are adorned with intricate coffered designs, while the walls are lined with Andalusian tiles, chandeliers, and wooden panels. Many rooms also feature sculptures above the doors, adding to the sense of grandeur.

A Legacy Preserved

Following Antoni Amatller’s death in 1910, his daughter Teresa continued to live in the house, maintaining its original charm. In 1942, she established the Amatller Institute of Hispanic Art to preserve her father’s legacy. Today, the foundation operates from the upper floors, while the Beletage serves as a museum, offering visitors a glimpse into the past.

The museum, which opened to the public in 2015, displays much of the original furniture and art collection, meticulously restored to reflect the home’s appearance in 1900. The ground floor now houses a café and a shop selling Amatller chocolates, ensuring that the family’s sweet legacy continues.
