Castillo de San Marcos

Castillo de San Marcos El Puerto de Santa María

Castillo de San Marcos

The Castillo de San Marcos in El Puerto de Santa María, Cádiz, Spain, is a remarkable blend of history, architecture, and culture. This fortress, constructed on the foundations of an ancient mosque in 1264, stands as a testament to the rich and varied history of the region. Commissioned by King Alfonso X El Sabio after the city's conquest, the castle was dedicated to the Virgin Mary and transformed into a fortified church, blending elements of Islamic and Christian architecture.

The History of Castillo de San Marcos

The origins of Castillo de San Marcos trace back to an Islamic mosque, which was repurposed into a fortified church by Alfonso X El Sabio in the 13th century. This transformation involved reinforcing the foundations with remnants of a nearby Roman structure, adding vaulted ceilings, and fortifying the sanctuary with four towers. Two of these towers are hexagonal, while the other two are square, with the lower level of the hexagonal towers serving as the main chapel for the Virgin of Miracles.

The castle retains significant elements of its Islamic past, including the qibla wall where the mihrab was located and the distinct Almohad architectural style. This style is evident in the smooth, horizontal lines and the prominent upper section of the hexagonal tower, as well as its unique vaulted ceilings. The castle also served as the initial headquarters for Alfonso X's new military order, the Order of Santa María de España, which later merged with the Order of Santiago.

Throughout its history, Castillo de San Marcos played a crucial defensive role against invasions from North Africa. In the late 13th century, Sancho IV gifted the castle and the surrounding village to the Genoese admiral Benedetto Zaccaria, and later to Alonso Pérez de Guzmán El Bueno. In 1306, Guzmán bequeathed the castle to his daughter Leonor de Guzmán upon her marriage to Luis de España, marking the beginning of the House of Medinaceli's influence over the area.

Exploring Castillo de San Marcos

Visitors to Castillo de San Marcos can immerse themselves in centuries of history and architectural splendor. The castle underwent significant expansions in the 15th century, including the addition of a sacristy with three sections covered by Gothic vaults and various rooms accessible from the terrace above the church vaults, known as the parade ground.

One of the castle's intriguing aspects is its connection to famed explorers like Christopher Columbus and Juan de la Cosa. During the tenure of Luis de la Cerda, the castle hosted numerous illustrious mariners, although its importance as both a sanctuary and a fortress waned over time. The castle's historical significance is also reflected in Alfonso X's Cantigas and later in the 1823 novel Un servilón y un liberalito by Fernán Caballero, which vividly describes the castle's state.

In the 19th century, the castle's ownership shifted to the Medinaceli family, and it was closed in 1868, remaining abandoned until its restoration in the 1940s. Today, the castle is owned by the local winery, Bodegas Caballero, and is open to the public. It hosts medieval music festivals and serves as a venue for the Alfonso X Studies Chair.

The Map of Juan de la Cosa

Adjacent to the Castillo de San Marcos is a tribute to Juan de la Cosa, a notable mariner who created a richly decorated map on parchment in 1500. This map, now housed in the Naval Museum of Madrid, was likely commissioned by a powerful member of the Catholic Monarchs' court. Visitors can view a bust of Juan de la Cosa and a replica of his map near the castle, offering a glimpse into the maritime history of the region.

Visiting Castillo de San Marcos

A visit to Castillo de San Marcos is a journey through time, revealing layers of history from its Islamic origins to its Christian transformation and beyond. The castle's architecture, with its blend of Islamic and Gothic elements, provides a unique backdrop for exploring the cultural and historical evolution of El Puerto de Santa María.
