In the charming town of El Vendrell, nestled in the heart of Catalonia, stands the magnificent Sant Salvador del Vendrell church. This architectural gem, dedicated to Saint Salvador, is a beacon of history, art, and spirituality. The exterior of Sant Salvador del Vendrell is a testament to the grandeur of Baroque architecture. The façade is divided into three distinct sections, each contributing to the overall majestic appearance of the church. The central section, adorned with a grand entrance and a large rose window, is crowned by a semi-circular arch. This entrance, with its considerable dimensions, features intricately carved columns and a decorative frieze, typical of Baroque style, showcasing acanthus leaves and volutes. The right section of the façade includes a balcony with a flattened arch, while the left section is dominated by the imposing bell tower, complete with a clock and another balcony with a similar arch.
As you step inside, the church reveals its true splendor. The interior comprises a central nave flanked by three chapels on each side, a transept, and an apse decorated with a scallop shell design. The central nave is segmented and separated from the side chapels by semi-circular arches supported by pilasters. These pilasters extend into a protruding entablature that supports the barrel vault ceiling. At the heart of the transept, a grand dome rises, adding to the sense of space and light within the church. At the back of the church, the choir loft, supported by two large pilasters, adds another layer of architectural interest.
The bell tower of Sant Salvador del Vendrell is a striking feature of the church. Located on the left side of the main façade, this tower reaches impressive heights. The lower part of the tower is square, adorned with decorative cornices and a balcony with a flattened arch. The upper part transitions into an octagonal shape, divided into four sections by cornices. The second section features semi-circular openings housing the bells, while the third section is distinguished by a decorative stone railing topped with pinnacles. The final two sections of the tower are narrower, with semi-circular windows adding to the tower's elegance.
At the very top of the bell tower stands a bronze angel, a figure of great detail and significance. This angel, with a severe and concentrated expression, stands on one leg, with the other leg bent backward. One arm is placed on its waist, while the other extends forward, indicating the direction of the wind. The angel's head is adorned with a laurel crown, adding to its regal appearance. This figure not only serves as an ornament but also as a weather vane, guiding the townspeople with the direction of the wind.
The history of Sant Salvador del Vendrell is as rich and intricate as its architecture. In the late 17th century, the town of El Vendrell experienced significant growth, necessitating the construction of a new church to accommodate the increasing population. The Bishop of Barcelona granted permission for the construction, and work began on June 13, 1732. The bell tower, designed by Joan Antoni Rovira of Tarragona, was completed in 1784, the same year the bells were installed. These bells, named Salvadora and Anna, were cast in the town by Jaume Mestres of Reus and blessed on July 24, 1784.
The church has witnessed numerous historical events, including the Third Carlist War in 1874, during which Carlist troops entered the liberal stronghold of El Vendrell. The bell tower served as the final defense point, and the stones still bear the marks of bullet impacts from that tumultuous time.
Inside the church, the pulpit is a masterpiece of woodwork, showcasing the skill and artistry of its creators. The pulpit, accessed by a wooden staircase with a balustrade, is supported by a wooden bracket. It has a polygonal shape with six faces, four of which feature high-relief images of the four evangelists with their respective symbols. The soundboard, located a meter away from the pulpit and attached to the wall, is octagonal and topped with scallop shells and volutes arranged radially, supporting a statue of a saint.
This exquisite piece was crafted by Joan Constant, a master carpenter from El Vendrell, and F. Carulla Ribera, an artist-sculptor from Barcelona. It was blessed by the Archpriest J. Tous Farell on July 26, 1953, during the feast of Saint Anne.
Today, Sant Salvador del Vendrell stands as a living monument, embodying the faith, history, and artistic heritage of El Vendrell.
