In the charming town of Eschweiler, nestled in the district of Röthgen in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, stands the magnificent St. Marien Church. The Historical Tapestry of St. Marien

The story of St. Marien is deeply intertwined with the history of Röthgen and the broader Eschweiler area. Originally, the community of Röthgen was part of the parish of St. Peter and Paul in Eschweiler. However, the rapid population growth spurred by the Eschweiler mining industry in the latter half of the 19th century necessitated the establishment of a separate church.

The call for a new church was first made public on June 18, 1892, in the Volksbote newspaper by a provisional committee. The response was overwhelming, with over 200 citizens attending the initial meeting on June 19, 1892. This led to the founding of the church building association on December 10, 1892. After successful negotiations with the Bourscheidt family of Röthgen, the land for the church was secured in 1894.

The construction of St. Marien began with the fencing of the church building site on March 2, 1899. The church building association initially considered forming a limited liability company but ultimately decided on a registered association, which was officially registered in March 1904. The construction costs, exceeding 123,000 marks, were covered through donations and a loan.

Architect Johann Adam Rüppel from Bonn was chosen to design the church, with Lenzen from Bedburg serving as the construction manager. The foundation was staked out on May 19, 1904, and the cornerstone was laid on May 14, 1905. Due to insufficient foundations, the construction of a tower was prohibited by the local building police authority in the same year. The church was solemnly inaugurated and consecrated on October 30, 1906, and St. Marien was elevated to an independent parish on January 7, 1908, with Josef Kreuer as its first pastor. The consecration of the parish church was performed by the Auxiliary Bishop of Cologne, Joseph Müller, on September 27, 1911.

It serves as the parish church for the Catholic parish of Heilig Geist, which was formed in 2010 from five former parishes in the southern part of Eschweiler. The parish community includes the branch churches in Hastenrath, Bergrath, Nothberg, and Pumpe-Stich.

One of the most notable figures in the church's history is Wilhelm Zohren, who served as pastor from 1947 until his death in 1968. In his honor, the Pastor-Zohren-Haus in Röthgen was named after him, reflecting his significant contributions to the community.

In front of the church stands the Mariensäule, a Marian column that was inaugurated on March 25, 1957. This beautiful column serves as a reminder of the church's dedication to the Virgin Mary and is a focal point for parishioners and visitors alike.
