Indiana Michigan Power Center

Indiana Michigan Power Center Fort Wayne

Indiana Michigan Power Center

In the heart of Fort Wayne, Indiana, the Indiana Michigan Power Center stands as a beacon of modern architectural brilliance and historical intrigue. As the tallest office building in the city and the tallest reinforced concrete structure in Indiana, this towering edifice reaches a height of 442 feet, offering a unique spectacle that captures the imagination of both locals and tourists alike.

The Architectural Marvel

Designed by the acclaimed architectural firm Kevin Roche John Dinkeloo and Associates, the Indiana Michigan Power Center is an exemplar of modern design. Its most striking feature is the illusion of two separate buildings, created by the adjoining tower that houses the elevators. This clever design not only adds to the building's aesthetic appeal but also showcases the ingenuity of its architects.

The building's sleek, linear form is complemented by its minimalist façade, which reflects the sky and surrounding cityscape. As you gaze up at this architectural marvel, you'll find yourself entranced by its seamless blend of form and function, a true testament to the power of modern design.

A Journey Through History

The Indiana Michigan Power Center's story begins in the late 1970s, a time of ambitious development plans for downtown Fort Wayne. Originally, the vision included not just one, but three towers—a 20-story office tower and a 9-story hotel were also part of the grand plan. However, due to financial difficulties and a recession in the early 1980s, only the current tower was completed.

Despite these setbacks, the area where the additional towers were to be built has been transformed into a vibrant plaza. This space now hosts food trucks, community events, and farmer's markets, turning a story of economic challenge into one of community resilience and innovation.

The Tenants and Transformation

Originally known as One Summit Square, the building was home to Summit Bank and its holding company, Summcorp, alongside Indiana Michigan Power. Over the years, the building has seen a series of mergers and transformations. Today, Indiana Michigan Power remains the largest tenant, occupying the upper floors, while JPMorgan Chase maintains a significant presence on the lower levels.

In 2014, the building underwent a significant change when Hanning & Bean Enterprises, Inc., along with Simon Dragan and Pat Bruggeman, purchased it for $12 million. This acquisition led to a $5 million renovation and the renaming of the building to Indiana Michigan Power Center, complete with new signage that adorns its west and east facades.

Culinary Delights and Community Spaces

The building is not just a hub for business; it also offers culinary delights. The thirteenth floor, once home to the Window Garden Café, has seen several transformations. It reopened as NOLA on 13, offering a delightful dining experience with a view. This spot provides a perfect opportunity for visitors to enjoy a meal while taking in panoramic views of the city.

Down at street level, the plaza is a bustling community space. Whether you're grabbing a bite from a food truck or exploring a local farmer's market, the plaza offers a slice of Fort Wayne's vibrant community life. It's a place where the city's past and present converge, creating a lively atmosphere that invites both locals and tourists to linger and enjoy.

Exploring the Surroundings

While the Indiana Michigan Power Center itself is a sight to behold, its location in downtown Fort Wayne makes it a perfect starting point for exploring the city. Nearby attractions include the Grand Wayne Center and the Foellinger-Freimann Botanical Conservatory, both part of the original superblock development plan.

The area is also home to the historic Embassy Theatre, a beautifully restored venue that hosts a variety of performances and events. Whether you're a history buff, an architecture enthusiast, or simply looking for a unique urban experience, the surroundings of the Indiana Michigan Power Center offer something for everyone.

A Symbol of Resilience

The Indiana Michigan Power Center stands as a symbol of resilience and adaptability. From its ambitious beginnings to its current role as a cornerstone of the community, the building embodies the spirit of Fort Wayne. It tells a story of growth, change, and the enduring power of innovation.

As you stand before this towering structure, you'll not only see a remarkable architectural achievement but also feel the pulse of a city that has embraced its past while looking boldly to the future.
