During the Napoleonic era, the castle became the residence of the Prefect of the Harz Department under the Kingdom of Westphalia. With the eventual annexation of the Eichsfeld region by the Kingdom of Prussia, it transitioned to serve as the administrative headquarters for the Heiligenstadt district. Notably, the renowned writer Theodor Storm held his judicial office here during his time as a district judge in Heiligenstadt.
Today, the Mainzer Schloss functions as the administrative seat of the Eichsfeld district. Since 2019, it has been undergoing a comprehensive renovation, scheduled for completion in 2024, to preserve its historical integrity while adapting to modern needs.
