Nestled in the charming town of Heinsberg in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, the Begas Haus stands as a beacon of art and regional history. This museum, named after the illustrious Begas family of artists, offers visitors a unique glimpse into the cultural and historical tapestry of the region. The Begas family, whose artistic legacy spans four generations, has left an indelible mark on the art world, with Carl Joseph Begas, born in Heinsberg in 1794, being the patriarch of this distinguished lineage.
The Begas Haus, after undergoing an extensive three-year renovation, reopened its doors on March 12, 2014, in the historic premises of the former Kreismuseum. This significant building, which dates back to the 16th to 18th centuries, was expanded to include the adjacent Haus Lennartz, resulting in a comprehensive redesign both inside and out. Under the stewardship of Rita Müllejans-Dickmann, the museum has been reimagined with a fresh profile, focusing not only on the regional history of the Heinsberg area but also on the life and works of the Begas family.
The museum's efforts were recognized in 2017 when it was nominated for the European Museum of the Year Award. In September 2019, the Begas Haus further enriched its offerings by introducing the Kunst Aktiv program, which provides educational courses and workshops in museum pedagogy. Additionally, a bust of Emperor Wilhelm I, originally placed in the Heinsberg marketplace in 1908 and removed in 1942, now proudly stands near the museum's entrance, having been loaned to the museum in 2019.
The Begas Haus boasts two permanent exhibitions that are sure to captivate art enthusiasts and history buffs alike. The museum houses the largest collection of paintings, sculptures, and graphics by the Begas family in Germany. This impressive collection offers a comprehensive overview of the family's artistic achievements and their contributions to the art world.
In addition to the Begas family's works, the museum's regional history section features historical artifacts, documents, and valuable Christian ecclesiastical art and furniture from past centuries. These exhibits are thoughtfully curated to provide context to the Begas family's life and work, offering visitors a deeper understanding of the cultural and historical landscape of the region.
A significant portion of the permanent exhibition, approximately 90%, comes from the museum's own collection. The remaining items are on loan from prestigious institutions such as the Stiftung Stadtmuseum Berlin, the Alte Nationalgalerie of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, and the Begas family archive in Düsseldorf. With the support of various benefactors, the museum's collection has been further enriched with new acquisitions.
The Begas Haus is also known for its dynamic special exhibitions, which cover a wide range of themes and artistic expressions. Some notable past exhibitions include:
