Kirche Josef Horgen

Kirche Josef Horgen Horgen

Kirche Josef Horgen

Perched gracefully on a plateau above the quaint town of Horgen, Switzerland, the Kirche Josef Horgen, also known locally as St. Josef, stands as a beacon of faith and architectural splendor. This Roman Catholic parish church is not just a place of worship but a testament to the resilience and dedication of the local Catholic community over the centuries.

The Historical Roots of Kirche Josef Horgen

The history of Kirche Josef Horgen is deeply intertwined with the broader history of Horgen itself. The earliest mention of Horgen dates back to March 1, 952, when King Otto I gifted extensive lands in the region to the Fraumünster Abbey in Zurich. By 1247, the church in Horgen was acknowledged as a proprietary church of the Fraumünster, a status confirmed by Pope Innocent IV. However, significant changes were on the horizon.

In 1543, the church was transferred to the city of Zurich following the Reformation, which saw the medieval church repurposed for Protestant services. The Catholic community in Horgen had to wait until the Tolerance Edict of 1807 to celebrate Catholic masses again, initially limited to Zurich. The Industrial Revolution brought a wave of Catholic workers to Horgen, creating a pressing need for a local Catholic church.

The Birth of St. Josef Parish

By the mid-19th century, the Catholic community in Horgen had grown significantly, prompting the establishment of a mission station by Father Johann Joseph Röllin in 1865. The first Catholic mass in Horgen since the Reformation was celebrated in a hall at Bürgli, marking the beginning of a new chapter for local Catholics.

In 1868, the Association for the Maintenance of the Catholic Mission Station Horgen was founded, later renamed the Church Building Association in 1904. The quest for a dedicated Catholic church was on, and by 1870, the first meeting of the building committee for St. Josef Church took place. The church, dedicated to St. Joseph, the patron saint of workers and fathers, was completed and consecrated on September 29, 1872.

A New Era: The Modern Kirche Josef Horgen

As the Catholic community continued to grow, it became clear that a larger church was needed. In 1933, the decision was made to demolish the original church and build a new one. Renowned architect Anton Higi from Zurich was tasked with designing the new St. Josef Church. Construction began in 1933, and the new church was consecrated on June 24, 1934, by the Bishop of Chur, Laurenz Matthias Vincenz.

The new church, a striking concrete structure, features a 32-meter-high tower with a 6.5-meter cross, making it a prominent landmark visible from afar. The design elements, inspired by Bauhaus aesthetics, give the church a modern yet timeless appeal. In 1978, the church underwent significant renovations, including artistic enhancements by Peter Travaglini, who created a new altar area.

A Hub of Community and Faith

Kirche Josef Horgen is more than just a place of worship; it is a vibrant hub for the local Catholic community. The adjacent parish center, inaugurated in 2008, provides a space for various community activities, religious education, and social gatherings. The Room of Silence, located on the ground floor of the parish center, offers a peaceful retreat for meditation and prayer.

The church's role in the community was further solidified in 2020 when the parish of St. Antonius in Hirzel became part of the Horgen parish. Today, with over 6,000 members, the parish of Kirche Josef Horgen is one of the largest Catholic communities in the Canton of Zurich.
