Old Main

Old Main at Marshall University stands as an enduring symbol of academic excellence and historical significance in Huntington, West Virginia. This iconic structure, with its distinctive towers and red-brick façade, is a testament to the rich history and evolving legacy of the university. Nestled at the junction of Hal Greer Boulevard and Fourth Avenue, Old Main is a must-visit landmark for anyone exploring the campus or the city.

The Historical Roots of Old Main

The origins of Old Main can be traced back to a time before the establishment of the city of Huntington. The area, once known as Maple Grove, was characterized by its lush virgin timber and expansive grassy fields. In the 1820s, local farmers constructed a one-room log cabin named Mount Hebron Church, which served dual purposes as a place of worship and a school during the winter months.

By 1837, the local community recognized the need for a more substantial educational institution. A petition to the Virginia General Assembly led to the establishment of Marshall Academy in 1838, named in honor of John Marshall, a revered friend of John Laidley, a leading advocate for the school. The first classes were held in a two-story brick building that featured a chapel, completed in 1839.

Expansion and Evolution

The original building underwent several expansions, including a planned addition in 1854 that aimed to add a third floor and a west-side extension. However, funding challenges and the outbreak of the American Civil War delayed these plans. It wasn't until 1867, after West Virginia took control of the college, that construction resumed, culminating in the completion of another addition in 1870 and the construction of a veranda along the entire length of the structure.

By 1897, the interconnected buildings had become too small, leading to the demolition of the original 1839 structure. In its place, a new building designed by architects Frank E. Davis and Henry R. Davis was constructed. This new three-story edifice, completed in 1896 and initially named the College Building, featured a prominent brick tower with an observation platform.

Further Additions and Modernization

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Old Main continued to evolve with the addition of new buildings and extensions. In 1897, a new female dormitory named Normal Hall (later known as Ladies Hall and College Hall) was completed. By 1899, the Annex addition from 1870 and the 1896 building were combined, and in 1906, a western extension was added, necessitating the removal of the large bell tower from the 1870 addition.

Further appropriations in 1905 led to the construction of University Hall, a western attachment to the 1896 building, which included a commencement hall, recreation rooms, restrooms, a study hall, library, and gymnasium. This addition, completed in 1907, marked the final major expansion of Old Main.

In 1937, the building was officially named Old Main in a Marshall College catalog, and in 1973, it was placed on the National Register of Historic Sites.
