Tompkins County Public Library Ithaca

Tompkins County Public Library

Nestled in the heart of Ithaca, New York, the Tompkins County Public Library (TCPL) stands as a beacon of knowledge and community engagement. With its modern architecture and welcoming atmosphere, the library is a hub for residents and visitors alike, offering a wealth of resources and programs that cater to diverse interests and age groups.

The History of Tompkins County Public Library

The roots of the Tompkins County Public Library trace back to 1864 when it was founded by Ezra Cornell as the Cornell Free Library. This initial establishment was a cornerstone of the community, doubling as a venue for early Cornell University classes and commencements. From its original location at the southeast corner of Seneca and Tioga streets, the library served the community until 1960.

In 1967, the library was re-designated as the county's library, marking a new chapter with the construction of a $1.7 million building on North Cayuga Street. However, as the years passed and the community's needs grew, it became evident that more space was necessary. In November 2000, the library moved to its current location, a renovated former Woolworths department store at the corner of Cayuga and Green Street. This move doubled the library's space, allowing it to better serve its patrons.

Exploring Tompkins County Public Library

Today, TCPL is more than just a repository of books; it's a dynamic cultural hub that attracts nearly one million visitors annually. As you step inside, you're greeted by an extensive collection of books, digital resources, and a calendar brimming with programs for children, teens, and adults. The library's dedication to accessibility and inclusivity is evident in its offerings, which range from digital literacy labs to art exhibits.

One of the library's standout features is its role as the Central Library of the five-county Finger Lakes Library System. This designation underscores its importance in providing free and equal access to residents of Tompkins, Cayuga, Cortland, Seneca, Schuyler, and Tioga counties. Whether you're seeking a quiet corner to read or a lively event to attend, TCPL has something for everyone.

The Campaign for a 21st Century Library

In November 2014, the Tompkins County Public Library Foundation launched a $2.75 million Campaign for a 21st Century Library. This ambitious initiative aimed to expand and modernize the library's facilities, ensuring it could continue to meet the evolving needs of the community. The campaign supported the construction of a digital literacy lab, a teen center, and the expansion of the library's collection.

Thanks to a generous $1.4 million grant in 2016, the library underwent significant renovations, including the creation of a teen center. One of the campaign's highlights is the LEGO Library, a creative project led by Peter and Andrew McCracken. This 6' by 6' model of the library post-renovation is a testament to the community's dedication to innovation and education.

Supporting the Library

The library's success is bolstered by the support of the Tompkins County Public Library Foundation and The Friends of the Tompkins County Public Library. The latter group is renowned for hosting one of the largest booksales in the United States. Held annually in an Esty Street warehouse, this event draws thousands of book lovers eager to explore a vast array of books, records, CDs, and DVDs, all provided through generous community donations.

This community spirit is a defining feature of TCPL, reflecting the library's role as a cornerstone of civic engagement and cultural enrichment in Tompkins County.

A Part of the Ithaca Discovery Trail

As part of the eight-site Ithaca Discovery Trail, the Tompkins County Public Library is a gateway to exploration and learning. The trail connects visitors to a variety of cultural and educational attractions throughout the area, making TCPL an essential stop for anyone looking to delve into the rich tapestry of Ithaca's offerings.

In conclusion, the Tompkins County Public Library is more than just a place to borrow books; it's a vibrant community center that fosters learning, creativity, and connection. Whether you're a lifelong resident or a curious traveler, a visit to TCPL promises a rewarding experience filled with discovery and inspiration.
