Church of the Sagrario

The Architectural Marvel of the Church of the Sagrario

The Church of the Sagrario is a stunning example of neoclassical architecture, designed by the renowned Madrid architect Ventura Rodríguez in 1764. The construction was overseen by his nephew, Manuel Martín Rodríguez, and was completed in 1801. The church was consecrated on March 22 of that year, marking its official place in the spiritual and cultural life of the city.

As you approach the church, you are greeted by its impressive Corinthian façade, which is adorned with two grand columns supporting an entablature. Above this, the attic is crowned with sculptures by Miguel Verdiguier, depicting Saint Michael triumphing over the devil, alongside statues of Saint Peter and Saint Paul. These figures add a dynamic and spiritual dimension to the church's exterior, capturing the essence of its religious significance.

Exploring the Interior

The main altar is graced by a painting of the Assumption by Mariano Salvador Maella, while the side altars feature works such as the Agony of the Lord (Calvary) and the Martyrdom of Saint Pedro Pascual by Zacarías González de Velázquez.

The Mysterious Cripta

Beneath the church lies the crypt, mirroring the elliptical design of the main church above. Accessible from the Plaza de San Francisco, as well as via an internal staircase, the crypt is illuminated by a semi-circular window. It was adapted in 1940 to house the remains of those who perished in the Spanish Civil War.

Within this solemn space, a painting by Rafael Hidalgo de Caviedes and a remarkable sculpture of the Dying Christ by Jacinto Higueras offer a poignant reminder of sacrifice and redemption. The walls are adorned with eight large marble slabs, inscribed with the names of 328 war victims, with a principal slab bearing a dedicatory title.
