Schloss Kissing, nestled in the charming town of Kissing in Bavaria, Germany, is a delightful blend of history and architectural elegance. This former castle, now known as the Bäckerwirt, offers a captivating journey through time, from its origins as a judicial seat to its modern role as a bustling gastronomy hub.
The origins of Schloss Kissing date back to around 1500 when Captain Konrad Bering acquired the land from the Altomünster Monastery. The site, originally home to an earlier structure, became the foundation for a new residence. A significant historical moment occurred on July 15, 1530, when Emperor Charles V dined in the garden during the Augsburg Diet, marking the property's early prominence.
In 1560, the property underwent reconstruction under Melchior Manlich from Augsburg. However, financial difficulties led to its sale to Hieronimus Miesing and subsequently to Melchior Ilsung, who completed the building. The architectural significance of the site is underscored by the involvement of Elias Holl, a young architect who contributed to its design, as documented in his autobiography.
The Jesuit College of St. Salvator in Augsburg acquired the property in 1603, transforming it into a residence for the Hofmarksrichter and Jesuit brothers. Around 1703/04, the Jesuits commissioned a renovation in a simple Baroque style, possibly designed by Hans Georg Mozart, aligning with similar projects in nearby Mergenthau.
The dissolution of the Jesuit order in 1773 led to a shift in ownership, eventually resulting in the sale of the castle in 1809 to Josef Merkl, a master baker. Merkl transformed the building into a bakery and tavern, a function it retains to this day, affectionately known as the Bäckerwirt.
A renovation in 1970 saw changes to the interior, including the removal of the original staircase. However, the second-floor stucco and Baroque door frames remain preserved, offering a glimpse into its historical past. Subsequent exterior renovations have restored much of the building's original façade, maintaining its historical charm.
Perched on a hillside beneath the parish church of St. Stephan, Schloss Kissing is an architectural gem in the heart of Altkissing. The building's three-story gabled structure is accentuated by a strong cornice separating the upper floor from the former judicial quarters. The gables are highlighted by two additional bands, while the façade features painted corner rustication and ear-framed windows.
The entrance on the south side, with its curved top, dates back to the 18th century, although it is not the original door frame. The saddle roof, with its distinctive bend and dormer windows, adds character to the structure. A sundial adorns the south gable, beneath which a hoisting beam juts from the wall, hinting at its storied past.
Inside, the second floor houses an original door from the construction period. The entrance to the former chapel is particularly noteworthy, flanked by carved columns and retaining its original fittings. Three rooms boast stucco ceilings crafted by master Matthias Lotter in 1725, with the chapel's ceiling featuring a relief of St. Ignatius of Loyola, a nod to the building's Jesuit heritage.
Today, Schloss Kissing continues to thrive as a gastronomic destination. The Bäckerwirt offers a warm and inviting atmosphere, where guests can enjoy traditional Bavarian cuisine in a setting steeped in history.
