Stadtpark Lahr

Stadtpark Lahr Lahr/Schwarzwald

Stadtpark Lahr

In the heart of Lahr, nestled in the picturesque Black Forest region of Baden-Württemberg, Germany, lies the enchanting Stadtpark Lahr. This 4.5-hectare oasis is not only a haven for relaxation but also a venue for vibrant events, making it a beloved destination for locals and tourists alike. The park's allure is undeniable, with its meticulously landscaped gardens, historical significance, and a plethora of attractions that cater to all ages.

The Historical Roots of Stadtpark Lahr

The origins of Stadtpark Lahr date back to the mid-19th century when Christian Wilhelm Jamm, a prosperous merchant who amassed his wealth in Cuba, purchased an old linden garden between 1859 and 1861. Jamm commissioned a Parisian landscape architect to design an English-style garden complete with a pond, grotto, and winter garden around his grand villa. Surrounded by a high wall for privacy, this garden was a private retreat for Jamm.

Upon Jamm's death in 1875, he surprised the town by bequeathing a significant portion of his wealth to the city of Lahr. His generous donation included his villa and the surrounding garden, with the stipulation that it be transformed into a public park. Additionally, Jamm funded the construction of the Christuskirche, a striking domed church in the Italian Renaissance style, the city library, and other public amenities.

Transition to Public Ownership

Following Jamm's passing, the city appointed Josef Bauer, Jamm's former gardener, as the first city gardener of Lahr. Bauer's successor, Wilhelm Brennemann, expanded the park, adding enclosures for ducks and fallow deer. The park continued to flourish under the care of Brennemann's son, Wilhelm Brenneman Jr., who managed it from 1930 to 1958.

In 1958, Erwin Mayer took over the park's management, overseeing the acquisition of additional land that had previously served as a parade ground, circus venue, and sports field. Mayer's vision included the creation of a restaurant terrace, water features, a rhododendron garden, and an expanded animal collection.

The Riedel Era

In 1976, Eckard Riedel, a garden and landscape architect, assumed the role of park director. Riedel's tenure was marked by significant renovations and additions, including the restoration of animal enclosures and the pavilion from Jamm's era. He introduced a Mediterranean terrace, a cactus arena, and a water lily pond in the park's western section. Riedel also replaced old greenhouses with a renovated orangery and established a stunning rose garden, completed in 1985. A music pavilion, redesigned main square, and a new west-side entrance were added, enhancing the park's appeal.

Riedel's passion for the park led to the founding of the Freundeskreis Lahrer Stadtpark e.V. in 1988. This friends' association has since supported the park's maintenance and expansion, organizing events and raising funds. By the time Riedel retired in 1998, the association had grown to over 700 members. Today, the park is managed by Richard Sottru, who has continued Riedel's legacy of excellence.

A Modern-Day Paradise

Stadtpark Lahr's centerpiece is its exquisite rose garden, home to approximately 1,500 roses from over 250 varieties. Among these is the Bourbon Queen, dating back to 1835. The park's diverse tree collection includes a majestic Lebanese cedar over a century old. Visitors can also explore the eastern section, where an intriguing yew maze, the Bismarck monument by sculptor Adolf von Donndorf, and an animal enclosure await discovery.

The historic Villa Jamm now serves as a museum, with a charming knot garden adorning its entrance. Near the event stage stands a striking totem pole, a gift from the Canadian forces stationed in Lahr in 1977, adding an international touch to the park's eclectic charm.

Events and Celebrations

Stadtpark Lahr is renowned for its lively events, drawing visitors throughout the year. The Tulip Festival in April and the Rose Evening in June are among the most popular, celebrating the park's floral beauty with music, food, and festivities. Every two years, the Lahr town band hosts a spectacular light festival, attracting thousands of guests with its enchanting illuminations and performances.

In conclusion, Stadtpark Lahr is not just a park; it's a living testament to Lahr's rich history and community spirit. Whether you're a history enthusiast, nature lover, or simply seeking a peaceful retreat, this park offers a delightful escape into a world of beauty and tranquility. So, the next time you find yourself in Lahr, make sure to spend some time exploring the wonders of Stadtpark Lahr – a true gem in the heart of the Black Forest.
