By 1886, a provisional church was erected, and a decade later, in 1896, St. Josef was officially recognized as an independent parish.

The church's name honors St. Joseph of Nazareth, a tribute that can be traced back to a chapel built around 1676 near the present-day Hewag-Stift. This early chapel, constructed with timber and wattle, was frequently damaged by floods from the nearby Immigrather Bach and was ultimately demolished in 1830 due to its dilapidated state. The new St. Josef Church, whose foundation stone was laid in 1886, rose as a symbol of resilience and community spirit.

Architectural Grandeur

St. Josef Church is a splendid example of Romanesque architecture, characterized by its robust structure and timeless elegance. The initial construction phase culminated in 1901 with the consecration of the church, which was then covered with a temporary roof. The building process continued, and by 1915, the church had reached the height of its current nave.

The church tower, a prominent feature of the building, was completed in 1924. This towering structure houses four bells, cast by the Schilling-Lattermann foundry in Apolda. These bells, named after saints Sebastian, Anthony, Mary, and Joseph, were blessed and installed in 1925, replacing an older Gothic bell that was relocated to St. Paulus in Berghausen.
