By 1726, an oratory with two altars—one dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the other to St. John Nepomuk—was constructed, giving rise to what was known as the Church of the Little Madonna. In 1747, the Confraternity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus was established, further cementing the site's religious significance.

Fast forward to the early 20th century, the growing population necessitated a larger place of worship. Under the visionary leadership of Don Annibale Lafranchi, the construction of the new church began on April 17, 1922. Designed by architects Enea Tallone and Silvio Soldati, the church was completed on November 6, 1927. Initially perceived as too grand for its surroundings, the church soon became an integral part of the community. In 1952, Pope Pius XII granted it the title of minor basilica, recognizing its importance and beauty.

Architectural Marvel: The Exterior

The exterior of Herz Jesu Church is a sight to behold. The façade, divided into three sections corresponding to the interior naves, is adorned with intricate reliefs by sculptor Fiorenzo Abbondio. The central section features a grand rose window above the main portal, which is preceded by a portico supported by twin columns. This architectural design creates a harmonious blend of solidity and grace.

At the crossing of the transept and the central nave, an octagonal lantern rises, crowned with a wrought iron cross. The lantern's eight windows, each with a semicircular arch, allow natural light to flood the interior, enhancing the church's serene ambiance. The walls and ceilings are adorned with frescoes by Brescian painter Vittorio Trainini, painted in stages from 1937 to 1954, depicting various religious scenes and figures.

The semicircular apse houses the main altar, crafted from yellow marble, which stands as the focal point of the sanctuary. A recent addition to the church is a new altar, dedicated on November 6, 2022, and sculpted from Lodrino gneiss by Ticinese artist Paolo Foletti. This new altar, along with a new ambo, enhances the liturgical space, making it more visible and accessible to the congregation. The baptismal font, previously located near the entrance, has also been repositioned to a more prominent location within the church.

The Melodious Heart: The Pipe Organ

Built in 1952 by the Balbiani-Vegezzi Bossi company, the organ is situated in the gallery opposite the main entrance. With its electro-pneumatic transmission, two keyboards, and a concave-radial pedalboard, the organ produces a rich and resonant sound that fills the entire church, adding to the spiritual and aesthetic experience of the visitors.
