The History of Nice Cathedral

The origins of Nice Cathedral date back to the 11th century when Raimbald Rostagni brought relics of Saint Reparata from Rome and founded an oratory at the foot of the castle. By the 13th century, a church had been constructed on a piece of land belonging to the monks of the Saint-Pons Abbey, and it was recognized as a parish church in 1246.

The current structure of Nice Cathedral, however, began to take shape in the 17th century. The decision to relocate the cathedral from its original site on Castle Hill to its present location in the lower city was made in the early 16th century. This move was necessitated by the growing isolation of the original cathedral due to the expansion of fortifications by the Dukes of Savoy.

The construction of the new cathedral commenced in 1650 under the guidance of architect Jean-André Guiberto. The building process was gradual, with significant progress marked by the completion of the chancel in 1651 and the transept and dome by 1658. However, a tragic incident occurred when the vault of the nave collapsed, resulting in the death of Bishop Didier Palletis. The construction resumed in 1673 and was finally completed in 1699, with the cathedral being consecrated that same year.

Architectural Grandeur

Nice Cathedral is a stunning example of baroque architecture, inspired by the design of the Church of Santa Susanna in Rome. The cathedral's layout follows a Latin cross plan, with a grand dome at the intersection of the transept. The dome is adorned with colorful Genoese-style glazed tiles, adding to the cathedral's visual appeal.

The exterior of the cathedral features a baroque façade, which was added between 1825 and 1830. This façade, characterized by its ornate detailing and harmonious proportions, enhances the cathedral's grandeur. The Organs

The grand organ, located above the narthex, is a historic Boisseaux organ that adds a majestic auditory element to the cathedral's services. Additionally, there is a choir organ situated to the left of the chancel and another organ in the Jean-Paul II room, which serves as the rehearsal space for the cathedral's choir.

Recent Restorations

In recent years, Nice Cathedral has undergone extensive restoration work to preserve and enhance its architectural beauty. A comprehensive restoration campaign began in 2009, focusing on both the interior and exterior of the cathedral. The façade received special attention, with restoration efforts culminating in 2011, ensuring that the cathedral continues to shine as a beacon of historical and cultural significance.
