St. Salvator Nördlingen

St. Salvator Nördlingen Nördlingen

St. Salvator Nördlingen

St. Salvator Nördlingen, known locally as St. Salvator, is a captivating Catholic parish church nestled at the southwestern edge of Nördlingen's historic city center in Bavaria, Germany. This architectural gem, with its rich history and stunning features, is a must-visit for anyone exploring the region.

The Fascinating History of St. Salvator Nördlingen

The origins of St. Salvator Nördlingen are steeped in legend and faith. The church was established following a miraculous event in 1381 known as the Hostienwunder. During a ceiling collapse in the home of a dying man, a consecrated host went missing. After burning the debris, the host was found intact among the ashes, prompting an influx of pilgrims to the area. This led to the founding of a Carmelite monastery to accommodate the spiritual visitors, and the church was consecrated in 1422. Since 1825, the former monastery has served as a parish church.

In recent years, St. Salvator Nördlingen underwent extensive renovations from 2001 to 2012, with a budget of 2.43 million euros. This restoration included the commissioning of three artistically designed choir windows by Professor Johannes Schreiter, funded through a successful donation campaign. These windows were inaugurated on December 10, 2006, adding a modern touch to the church's historic ambiance.

Exploring the Interior of St. Salvator Nördlingen

As you step inside St. Salvator Nördlingen, you'll be greeted by the grandeur of its Gothic winged altar, originally crafted between 1505 and 1507 for St. Michael's Church in Fürth. Acquired in 1827, this altar replaced the original high altar, which was largely destroyed during the Napoleonic Wars. The altar features intricately painted panels from the late 15th century, likely created by artists from the Nuremberg Traut family.

The church also boasts two side altars: the Marian Altar and the Joseph Altar. Created in 1955 by Joseph Steinacker, they replaced the neo-Gothic altars removed during a renovation in the late 19th century. The Marian statue, purchased in 1954, adds a touch of mystery, with its origins dating back to either 1650 or 1520, depending on the source.

The Bells and Organ of St. Salvator Nördlingen

In the church's tower hang two bells, with the smaller one having a particularly intriguing history. Removed during World War II for war purposes, it was miraculously returned unscathed. The organ, built in 1889 by the Gebrüder Sieber workshop, is another highlight. With 28 registers on two manuals and a pedal, it was expanded in 2012 by the Kubak company, adding six new registers on an electric auxiliary chest. This blend of historical and modern elements creates a unique auditory experience for visitors.
