La Cachucha beach

La Cachucha beach Puerto Real

La Cachucha beach

La Cachucha beach, known locally as Playa de la Cachucha, is a charming urban beach nestled in the heart of Puerto Real, Cádiz, Spain. This picturesque beach, stretching nearly half a kilometer, is a true gem of the Bay of Cádiz, offering a serene escape with its fine orange sand and tranquil waters. Over the years, the beach has undergone several renovations, enhancing its dry area and adding protective breakwaters on both sides to prevent erosion and maintain its stability.

The Origin of the Name

The name La Cachucha has an interesting history. It is believed to have originated from the word casucha, referring to the small huts that once dotted the area in the 1950s. These huts were used by local fishermen to store their gear. Another theory suggests that the name comes from the small boats, known as cachuchos, that were traditionally moored here.

Beach Characteristics

La Cachucha beach is oriented East-South and is characterized by its large parking area and a scenic promenade, making it a popular spot for outdoor activities and events. The beach's extensive dry sand area is often chosen for various spectacles and open-air activities. Due to the influence of the tides, the beach reveals a vast muddy tidal plain at low tide, where small traditional fishing boats are stranded, reducing the bathing area to a tidal channel.

Flora and Fauna

The beach is home to a variety of bird species, including seagulls and shorebirds. The surrounding marshland areas also support a diverse avian population. The marine environment of La Cachucha beach is protected, being part of the Bay of Cádiz's marine conservation efforts (LIC) and the broader Bay of Cádiz Natural Park, which is recognized as a Ramsar site, LIC, ZEPA, and a natural park.

Therapeutic Properties

La Cachucha beach has a rich tradition of thalassotherapy, dating back to the early 19th century. Historical records mention several spas in the area, such as Perpetuo Socorro, Santa María, Santa Marina, and El Cobre. These spas attracted visitors from all over Andalusia and beyond, seeking the therapeutic benefits of the beach's waters and mud. Although this tradition faded over the 20th century, recent studies have confirmed the excellent therapeutic properties of La Cachucha's waters and mud, sparking interest in reviving this activity.
