The Genesis of the Radiant City

After overcoming numerous financial and regulatory hurdles, the final plan for the Radiant City was approved in June 1950. The chosen site was in Rezé, close to the port and surrounded by a lush, wooded park. Construction began in June 1953 and was completed in just eighteen months, with the first residents moving in on March 16, 1955.

Architectural Brilliance

The Radiant City rises majestically to a height of 52 meters, stretching 108 meters in length and 20 meters in width. Its design embodies Le Corbusier's vision of a vertical village, housing nearly 300 apartments across seventeen floors. The building is supported by pilotis, or stilts, which elevate it above the ground, creating an open, airy feel and allowing the landscape to flow beneath it.

Each apartment in the Radiant City is designed according to the Modulor, Le Corbusier's innovative system of proportions based on human measurements. However, changes in legislation in 1971 led to the dissolution of the cooperative system, and residents had to choose between renting or purchasing their apartments. Today, the building is home to a mix of owners and tenants, with social housing units managed by Atlantique Habitations.

In 1965, its facades and roofs were listed in the Inventory of Historic Monuments, a status that was later expanded to include the interior circulation areas, the rooftop school, and a model apartment on the sixth floor. Extensive renovations have been undertaken over the years to maintain the building's structural integrity and aesthetic appeal. In the late 1990s, the prefabricated concrete facades were completely refurbished, and further restorations of the exterior joinery took place in 2004 and 2010.
