With the assistance of his brother-in-law Auguste Hebbelynck and contractor Monnoyer, the first stone was laid in September 1900, and the grand opening took place on July 24, 1904. Although the construction cost nearly three million francs, double the initial estimate, the result was a breathtaking edifice that was designated a protected monument in 1988.
