Henkenshage

Henkenshage Sint-Oedenrode

Henkenshage

Nestled amidst the serene landscapes of Sint-Oedenrode in the Netherlands, Henkenshage, locally known as Kasteel Henkenshage, stands as a testament to centuries of history and architectural evolution. This enchanting castle, with its fairy-tale turrets and picturesque moat, invites visitors to step back in time and explore its storied past and captivating beauty.

The Historical Journey of Henkenshage

Henkenshage’s origins trace back to the 12th or 13th century, originally serving as a fortified manor house for the noble Van Rode family. Known as Huis Strijpe or Streepen in the 15th century, the name Henkenshage first appeared in records as early as 1387. The name 'Haenckenshage' likely refers to a person, possibly a derivative of Johannes.

Throughout the centuries, Henkenshage changed hands among various influential families. The Van den Velde family, prominent in the local governance of Sint-Oedenrode during the 14th century, were among its earliest known occupants. The castle witnessed numerous transitions, including ownership by the noble families of Van Lanckvelt, Van Haren, and Van den Oetelaar, each leaving their mark on its history.

Architectural Evolution

The architectural journey of Henkenshage is as intriguing as its history. Originally a modest, moated building, it underwent significant transformations in the 19th century. In 1850, the castle received its current, more grandiose appearance with the addition of corner towers, stables, and service buildings. The moat was reconfigured, and a courtyard was introduced, enhancing its castle-like allure.

Further renovations in the early 20th century by architect Jos Cuypers and garden designer Leonard Springer added to its charm. The castle's quasi-medieval appearance, with its round towers and fortified walls, continues to captivate visitors today.

Exploring Henkenshage Today

Henkenshage offers a delightful experience for both history enthusiasts and casual tourists. As you cross the bridge over the tranquil moat, you are welcomed by the castle's impressive facade, flanked by two round towers that guard the entrance.

Inside, the castle hosts a variety of events, from corporate gatherings to weddings, making it a lively venue steeped in elegance. The Van Coehoorn Hall, adorned with a detailed family tree and watercolors of French estates, serves as both a museum and a wedding venue, offering a glimpse into the lives of its former noble residents.

The Enchanting Gardens

The castle gardens, lovingly restored in 2002, are a testament to the enduring beauty of nature and design. Stroll through the lush greenery, where ancient oaks stand as silent witnesses to the passage of time. The gardens also house the Chapel of Our Lady of Consolation, built in 1949, adding a serene touch to the landscape.

Designed by Leonard Springer and later restored by Arda van Helsdingen, the gardens are freely accessible to visitors, providing a peaceful retreat for reflection and relaxation.

A Rich Cultural Legacy

Henkenshage is not just a beautiful architectural gem; it is a cultural hub that has served various public purposes over the years. During World War II, it functioned as a distribution office and later as the headquarters for the 101st Airborne Division in September 1944. Post-war, it faced potential demolition but was saved and restored, thanks to the generous contributions of the De Girard de Mielet van Coehoorn family, ensuring its preservation for future generations.

From 1962 to 1976, the castle housed a library, and until 1997, it served as the social services department for the municipality. Today, it continues to be a vibrant venue for events, celebrations, and cultural activities.
