Christian's Church

Christian's Church Sønderborg

Christian's Church

Christian's Church, locally known as Christianskirken, is a captivating architectural gem nestled in the town of Sønderborg, Denmark. This remarkable church, which serves the Christian parish, stands as a testament to the town's rich cultural and spiritual heritage. Its striking design and historical significance make it a must-visit destination for anyone exploring this charming part of Denmark.

The History of Christian's Church

The origins of Christian's Church can be traced back to the mid-20th century. The idea of constructing a new church in Sønderborg was first conceived in 1944, with an estimated budget of 800,000 Danish kroner. By 1952, the community had managed to raise 300,000 kroner, prompting the architect and building committee to agree on a phased construction approach.

The first phase of the church's construction was completed in 1957. However, the church's design was not finalized until 1973 when it was expanded to include a transept in a Gothic style. The original plans included a tower, but this was never built. The church was designed by Kaare Klint, the son of P.V. Jensen Klint, the architect behind the famous Grundtvig's Church in Copenhagen. Kaare Klint's influence is evident in the architectural style of Christian's Church, which shares similarities with Grundtvig's Church and other churches designed by the Klint family.

Unfortunately, Kaare Klint passed away in 1954, before the first phase of the church was completed. His son, Esben Klint, took over the project and also oversaw the church's expansion. However, Esben Klint also passed away before the construction began, leaving the final touches to local architect Mogens Meyling. The current form of Christian's Church is a result of Meyling's efforts.

In 1997, the new parish hall, Christiansgården, and a vicarage north of the church, designed by architects Johannes and Inger Exner, were inaugurated on the first Sunday of Advent.

The Architecture of Christian's Church

Christian's Church is designed as a processional church, accommodating around 500 people, with an east-west orientation and a freestanding altar. The church is constructed in the traditional style with a nave, side aisles, and transepts. The architectural style is characteristic of the Klint family, featuring Gothic elements in yellow brick. The nave is topped with vaults, creating a sense of grandeur and solemnity.

The chancel, elevated above the main body of the church, ends in an apse with large windows facing east. Four smaller windows are adorned with stained glass mosaics created by painter Knud Lollesgaard (1911-1997).

Christian's Church is situated at the western end of Sønderborg's eastern cemetery. The cemetery, covering nearly eight hectares, was designed by Johannes Trolle and is located on a hill with a height difference of about seven meters, adding to the church's majestic presence.

The Interior and Furnishings

The interior of Christian's Church is as impressive as its exterior. The altar table and baptismal font are made of granite, exuding a sense of timelessness and solidity. Instead of a traditional altarpiece, the church acquired four paintings by artist Arne Haugen Sørensen for its 50th anniversary in 2007. Three of these paintings are displayed on the apse wall behind the altar, serving as a modern altarpiece. The fourth painting is placed on the wall in the northern side aisle, visible from the baptismal font. The four paintings depict The Holy Family, The Last Supper, The Crucifixion, and The Resurrection.

The crucifix, dating back to the 14th century, features a smiling Christ, adding a unique and historical touch to the church's interior. The hexagonal pulpit, made of oak and set on a granite base, was designed by Kaare Klint, as was the organ facade.

The church's main organ, built by Marcussen & Søn from Åbenrå, has 37 stops, offering a rich and powerful sound that fills the church during services and concerts. A smaller choir organ with four stops, crafted by Bruno Christensen & Sønner from Terkelsbøl, complements the main organ, providing versatility in musical performances.
