The Birth of Strawberry Studios

Originally known as Inter-City Studios, this iconic space began its journey above a music store in Stockport. It was the brainchild of Peter Tattersall, a former road manager for Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas. In 1968, Tattersall partnered with Eric Stewart, the lead guitarist and singer of the Mindbenders, who later became a member of the renowned band 10cc. Together, they relocated to larger premises on Waterloo Road, and Stewart, inspired by the Beatles’ song Strawberry Fields Forever, christened the studio with its now-famous name.

The studio soon caught the attention of songwriter Graham Gouldman, who joined as an investor. Gouldman, along with Stewart, Kevin Godley, and Lol Creme, would go on to form 10cc, a band that would make Strawberry Studios its creative home.

Early Days and Breakthroughs

In its early days, Strawberry Studios was a modest setup, with walls lined with egg boxes for sound insulation and a makeshift control desk. Despite its humble beginnings, the studio quickly gained a reputation as a vibrant hub for musicians. The turning point came in 1969 when American producers Jerry Kasenetz and Jeffry Katz of Super K Productions booked the studio for three months, allowing the partners to upgrade their equipment and transform it into a professional recording space.

The studio also attracted legendary acts such as Joy Division, The Smiths, The Stone Roses, and The Moody Blues. Even Paul McCartney graced its halls, adding to the studio’s illustrious reputation.

The studio’s atmosphere was electric, with 10cc recording their first four albums within its walls. In 1976, recognizing the demand for their services, Gouldman and Stewart opened Strawberry Studios South in Dorking, Surrey. This expansion allowed them to cater to more artists while maintaining the original studio in Stockport, now affectionately known as Strawberry Studios North.

The studio's influence extended beyond music production. In 1978, Strawberry Mastering opened in London, providing complete control over the recording process from start to finish. This move solidified Strawberry Studios’ position as a leader in the industry.

The Final Years and Enduring Impact

Despite its success, the Stockport studio was sold in the 1980s and ceased operations as a music studio in the early 1990s. However, its legacy endures. In 2007, a plaque was installed by the Borough of Stockport to commemorate the studio’s historical significance. The building remains a symbol of Stockport’s rich musical heritage.

In 2017, a dedicated exhibit at the Stockport Museum celebrated the studio’s contributions to music, showcasing equipment and artwork from its heyday. Enthusiasts and former patrons gathered to relive the magic of Strawberry Studios, a testament to its lasting influence.
