The earliest records of religious life here date back to the 7th century, during the Frankish colonization. Initially, the community was served by the church on the Vogelsberg. By the 9th century, Astheim became part of the Urpfarrei Volkach on the Kirchberg, marking its spiritual significance in the region.

Under the rule of the Counts of Castell, a chapel dedicated to St. John was established, which later became part of the Würzburg Cathedral chapter in 1158. The church gained independence from Volkach in 1408, a status confirmed by the Würzburg Prince-Bishop Johann von Egloffstein in 1410. The church's patronage was initially held by the Seinsheim/Schwarzenberg family, with the first priest, Friedrich Wüsting, serving until 1443.

Architectural Splendor

The Pfarrkirche, completed in 1509, is a splendid example of late Gothic architecture. The church is oriented eastward and features a hall construction style. The tower, located north of the nave, is a prominent feature, with its five stories marked by distinctive windows. The bell chamber, adorned with four arched windows, sits at the top, capped by a flat dome and a decorative cross.

The nave is elegantly structured with two round-arched windows on the north side and a central portal on the west facade, crowned by a canopy and a long arched window above. The southern facade is simpler, with a single window and a painted sundial. Inside, the nave boasts a flat barrel vault, while the choir, with its pentagonal design, is topped by a net vault and features a single round-arched window with Gothic tracery.

The Artistic Interior

The interior of the Pfarrkirche is a treasure trove of baroque artistry, reflecting the 18th-century transformations. The high altar, a masterpiece from the mid-18th century, is dedicated to the Holy Cross. Created by Johann Peter Wagner, it features a four-column structure with a central crucifixion group, flanked by figures of Mary and John. Above, the altar is crowned by a depiction of the Holy Spirit and God the Father, framed by a broken pediment.

The side altars, mirroring the high altar's design, are dedicated to the Virgin Mary and St. Sebastian. Each altar features two columns and relief figures against a blue background, with ornate cornices and vases above. The left altar showcases Mary with Child, while the right altar highlights St. Sebastian, flanked by St. John Nepomuk and St. Bruno.

Memorials and Bells

The church also serves as a resting place for members of the Schwarzenberg family, with two epitaphs located on the left side of the choir. These memorials, crafted by renowned artists, depict the deceased in prayerful poses, surrounded by heraldic symbols.

The church's bell ensemble includes three bells, two from the 16th century and one from the 18th century, donated by the Würzburg Prince-Bishop Karl Philipp von Greiffenclau zu Vollrads in 1751.
