The Herz-Jesu-Kirche, or Church of the Sacred Heart, was born out of necessity in the early 20th century. In 1922, the parish of Herz Jesu was officially established, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the local community. Franz Xaver Schweiger, the first pastor, was instrumental in the church's construction, though he sadly passed away before its completion.
The architectural journey of the church began with the laying of its cornerstone on July 2, 1933. The initial designs were crafted by Professor Otho Orlando Kurz and Eduard Herbert, but following Kurz's death, Professor Fritz Becker took the reins to see the project to fruition. The church was consecrated on June 3, 1934, by Bishop Michael Buchberger of Regensburg, and it has since become a spiritual beacon in the region.
The Herz-Jesu-Kirche's design is both striking and functional, with a layout that reflects its urban setting. The church stretches 55.5 meters in length and 23.5 meters in width, with a height of 12.6 meters. Its facade is adorned with two towers, each crowned with a 4-meter-high cross, reaching a total height of 22 meters. The eastern tower features clocks on three sides, while the western tower houses six resonant bells, which have been part of the church since 1949.
Inside, the church is divided into a main nave and two side aisles, separated by six towering columns of yellow Jura marble. The elevated chancel is dominated by a stunning mosaic by Professor Josef Eberz, composed of four million mosaic pieces. This masterpiece depicts Christ as King and High Priest, flanked by Mary and John, creating a visual focal point that captures the essence of faith and artistry.
Visitors to Herz-Jesu-Kirche are treated to an array of artistic and historical treasures. The high altar, crafted from Trento marble, is complemented by a modern altar added in 1972. The side altars feature depictions of St. Joseph with the Christ Child and the Annunciation scene, adding layers of religious significance to the space.
The church's stained glass windows are a marvel in themselves. On the left, seven windows illustrate the seven sacraments, while those on the right depict the seven works of mercy. Beneath the main church lies the underchurch, a serene space that houses the tomb of Pastor Franz Xaver Schweiger. Here, visitors can also find the poignant Grieving Mother of God relief by Wilhelm Vierling, which depicts scenes from Mary's life and offers a place for reflection and remembrance.
In addition, the underchurch features a memorial altar dedicated to those who have fallen in battle and to deceased parishioners, ensuring that the church remains a place of solace and remembrance for the community.
Herz-Jesu-Kirche's bells are a significant feature, each with its own unique tone and history. The set of six bells includes the Herz-Jesu bell, the Marien bell, and others, each inscribed with messages of faith and hope. The bells create a harmonious soundscape that resonates throughout the town, marking the passage of time and the rhythm of community life.
In addition to the bells, the church is home to a majestic organ, installed in 1991 by Georg Jann. With three manuals, 52 registers, and 3,920 pipes, this organ is a masterpiece of musical engineering, providing a rich auditory experience for church services and concerts alike.
