Museum of World Treasures

In the heart of Wichita, Kansas, lies an extraordinary destination that promises to take visitors on a journey through time and across the globe. The Museum of World Treasures is a captivating repository of history, culture, and wonder, offering a diverse array of exhibits that span from prehistoric times to contemporary history. Whether you're a history buff, a curious traveler, or a family looking for an educational adventure, this museum has something to fascinate and inspire everyone.

History of the Museum

The Museum of World Treasures opened its doors on April 22, 2001, initially under the name Museum of Ancient Treasures. Located in the Garvey Building in Downtown Wichita, the museum began with an impressive collection amassed by its founder, Dr. Jon Kardatzke. However, the collection quickly expanded to include over 30 individual private collections, encompassing a wide range of historical periods and cultures. The acquisition of three complete dinosaur skeletons necessitated a move to a larger space, leading to the museum's relocation to the Farm and Art Market in Old Town, Wichita, in 2003. Renamed the Museum of World Treasures, it now occupies a reconstructed three-story warehouse, meticulously renovated to accommodate its vast and growing collection.

First Floor Wonders

The first floor of the museum is a haven for those intrigued by ancient history and paleontology. One of the standout exhibits is Ivan the T. rex, a colossal Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton discovered by Alan Komrosky and Gary Olson in 2007. This impressive specimen is about 65% fossil, boasting the most complete tail of any T. rex ever found, with only three vertebrae missing. The Sea Creatures of the Plains exhibit showcases Kansas marine fossils, including a 34-foot Tylosaurus, a Xiphactinus, and a mosasaur, providing a glimpse into the prehistoric oceans that once covered the region.

For those fascinated by ancient civilizations, the Egyptian mummies exhibit features female mummies from ancient Egypt, offering a poignant connection to the distant past. The Coins of the Roman Emperors exhibit presents a 50-foot timeline adorned with gold, silver, and bronze coins from nearly every Roman Emperor, accompanied by detailed write-ups on their exploits and conquests. The World Civilizations section showcases artifacts from Greek, Roman, Etruscan, Egyptian, Pre-Columbian, African, Southeast Asian, and Ancient Near Eastern cultures, providing a comprehensive overview of human history.

Second Floor Treasures

The second floor of the museum delves into military history, presidential memorabilia, and the grandeur of royalty. The More Than Darkness exhibit explores the Middle Ages through documents and artifacts, while A Touch of Classicism: Telling the Story of the Renaissance takes visitors on a journey through the cultural phenomenon that shaped modern Europe. The Military Gallery is a treasure trove of weaponry and artifacts from significant conflicts, including the Revolutionary War, the American Civil War, World War I (featuring a large-scale recreation of trench warfare), World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.

The American Presidents Gallery is a must-see for history enthusiasts, containing the signature of every American president and a replica of the famous Resolute Desk. This exhibit offers a unique perspective on the leaders who have shaped the United States throughout its history.

Third Floor Highlights

The third floor of the museum is dedicated to American history and features a variety of intriguing exhibits. All Are Not Free tells the story of life east of the Iron Curtain during the Cold War, while Ivan's PlayHouse provides a kid-oriented play space with educational components, making it a hit with families. Romancing the West showcases artifacts related to cowboys, Native Americans, frontier living, the Pony Express, and other aspects of Western history.

Music lovers will be drawn to the Historic Composers and Music exhibit, which features original manuscripts from Mozart, Beethoven, Elvis, and Frank Sinatra. The Kardatzke Historic Authors Collection displays works from renowned authors and poets such as Robert Frost and Mark Twain, offering a literary journey through time. Additionally, the top floor houses a large banquet room available for private functions, making it a versatile space for events.

Rotating Exhibits

The Museum of World Treasures also features rotating exhibits, ensuring that there is always something new and exciting to discover. These temporary exhibits provide fresh perspectives on various historical and cultural topics, keeping the museum experience dynamic and engaging for repeat visitors.
