Evangelische Kirche Wittenberge

Evangelische Kirche Wittenberge Wittenberge

Evangelische Kirche Wittenberge

Nestled in the charming town of Wittenberge, Brandenburg, the Evangelische Kirche Wittenberge stands as a testament to resilience and architectural splendor. This historic church is not just a place of worship but a beacon of the town’s rich past and cultural heritage. Whether you're a history enthusiast, an architecture aficionado, or simply a curious traveler, a visit to this church promises a journey through time.

The Storied Past of Evangelische Kirche Wittenberge

The origins of the Evangelische Kirche Wittenberge trace back to the 13th century, coinciding with the town’s founding. However, the church has faced its fair share of trials, including devastating fires in 1652 and 1757 that razed the original structures. Each time, the resilient townsfolk rebuilt, determined to preserve their spiritual and communal heart.

The current structure, a masterpiece of neo-Gothic design, was constructed between 1869 and 1872. Designed by the Potsdam government inspector Ferdinand Wilhelm Horn and executed by the royal architect Johann Friedrich Petzold, the church was inaugurated on October 28, 1872. This new edifice replaced the previous one that had become too small and dilapidated by 1870, making way for a grander vision.

Architectural Marvels

The Evangelische Kirche Wittenberge is a striking example of neo-Gothic architecture, a style that evokes the grandeur of medieval cathedrals with a modern twist. Its elongated cruciform layout is accentuated by a polygonal apse and a slender, soaring west tower that commands attention from afar.

The church’s exterior is a tapestry of intricate designs, featuring flat buttresses, lofty tracery windows, and quatrefoil friezes that harken back to the brick Gothic tradition. The west portal, adorned with a stylized gable and pinnacles, invites visitors to step into a realm of historical elegance.

Inside, the church is a sanctuary of light and space, embodying the architectural legacy of Karl Friedrich Schinkel. The three-aisled nave is elegantly divided by wooden pillars supporting longitudinal galleries. The cross arms are crowned by ribbed vaults, lending an air of solemnity and grace.

The Majestic Organ

No visit to the Evangelische Kirche Wittenberge would be complete without experiencing its magnificent organ. Crafted in 1935 by Martin Pflug of Wittenberge, this organ is one of the largest in Brandenburg and is a protected historical monument in its own right.

In 2011-2012, the renowned Schuke organ builders of Potsdam meticulously restored the organ, ensuring its nearly 3,000 pipes continue to fill the church with harmonious melodies. The restoration included a complete overhaul of the electrics and the installation of a modern, reversible set system, allowing for a rich and versatile musical experience.

A Community Hub

Beyond its architectural and historical significance, the Evangelische Kirche Wittenberge serves as a vibrant hub for the local community. It is part of the parish district of Wittenberge-Land within the Prignitz church district of the Evangelical Church Berlin-Brandenburg-Silesian Upper Lusatia.

The church hosts a variety of events, from regular worship services to cultural gatherings and concerts, fostering a sense of unity and shared heritage among the townspeople and visitors alike.
