The roots of the Catholic community in Wunstorf trace back to the 19th century, when Catholic land and industrial workers began settling in the area. Initially, these early Catholics were served by priests from Nienburg and later from Neustadt am Rübenberge. The first Catholic service post-Reformation was held on January 4, 1884, in a corridor of the Wunstorf State Hospital, now known as KRH Psychiatrie Wunstorf. Subsequent services took place in the hospital chapel.
In 1903, the community saw the inauguration of a newly built mission chapel on Bahnhofstraße, dedicated to St. Boniface. The influx of workers for agricultural projects, the construction of the Mittelland Canal, the Reichsautobahn 2, and the nearby airbase contributed to the growth of the Catholic population in Wunstorf.
Post-World War II, the parish experienced a significant increase in its congregation due to the arrival of refugees and displaced persons. The small mission chapel soon became insufficient for the burgeoning community. Under the guidance of Father Georg Kliche, the old chapel was demolished, and a new, larger church was constructed. On November 28, 1954, Bishop Joseph Godehard Machens consecrated the new St. Bonifatius Church.
The church is a spacious, white-plastered hall with a gable roof and a flat ceiling. The interior features a recessed, barrel-vaulted chancel that adds a touch of elegance to the otherwise simple design. The rectangular bell tower, standing adjacent to the southern portal front, is a striking feature of the church's exterior. This tower houses the bell from the original mission chapel, cast in 1907, and a bell from the demolished Luther Filialkirche, added in 2014.
Inside, the church boasts an altar painting and a baptismal window designed by the artist Claus Kilian, adding a modern artistic touch to the sacred space. The altar area is adorned with a striking mosaic depicting religious figures, which serves as a focal point for the congregation during services.
St. Bonifatius has always been more than just a place of worship; it is a vibrant community hub. In 1956, the parish was elevated to a curacy and then to a full parish in 1964. Under the leadership of Father Werner Langer, the church underwent several modernizations in line with the liturgical reforms of the Second Vatican Council. These changes included the acquisition and development of the neighboring villa, now known as Haus 15, which serves as a center for parish activities.
The parish also expanded its reach by incorporating nearby churches: St. Hedwig in Steinhude, St. Marien in Rehburg, and St. Konrad von Parzham in Bokeloh. Although the Holy Cross Filial Church in Luthe, built in 1970/71, was deconsecrated in 2010, the spirit of community remains strong.
St. Bonifatius is home to a variety of community groups and activities. The parish founded a scout troop in 1952, followed by the establishment of youth groups, a Catholic Workers' Movement (KAB), a parish library, and a church choir. The church's commitment to ecumenism is evident in its early collaboration with the local Protestant church, which hosted Catholic services during the construction of the new St. Bonifatius Church.
Today, St. Bonifatius continues to thrive as a center of spiritual and communal life in Wunstorf.
