Museum aan de Stroom

Museum aan de Stroom Antwerp

Museum aan de Stroom

The Museum aan de Stroom (MAS) in Antwerp is a beacon of culture and history nestled in the heart of the city’s old port area, known as the Eilandje. This striking architectural marvel, with its red sandstone and glass facade, stands as a testament to Antwerp's vibrant past and its dynamic connection to the world. Since its opening in 2011, the MAS has been a hub of art, history, and culture, offering visitors an immersive journey through time and across continents.

The Architecture of MAS

Designed by Neutelings Riedijk Architects, the MAS is an architectural gem that rises 60 meters above the Antwerp skyline. Its unique design, resembling a stack of boxes, is both modern and monumental. The building’s distinctive red sandstone exterior is interspersed with large glass panels, creating a mesmerizing play of light and shadow. The panoramic rooftop terrace offers breathtaking views of the city and the Scheldt River, making it a must-visit spot for anyone exploring Antwerp.

Exploring the Exhibitions

The MAS houses eight exhibition spaces, each offering a unique insight into the world’s art, culture, and history. The museum’s collection boasts around 600,000 pieces, ranging from maritime artifacts to contemporary art. Visitors can explore the rich tapestry of Antwerp’s history, its role in international trade, and its cultural exchanges with Europe, Africa, Asia, America, and Oceania.

The second floor features the Kijkdepot, a fascinating space where visitors can view a selection of the museum’s extensive collection. This area is freely accessible, allowing guests to marvel at the diverse artifacts displayed behind glass walls and in open storage.

Temporary Exhibitions

The MAS is renowned for its temporary exhibitions, which delve into various artistic and historical themes. These exhibits often involve collaborations with other museums and institutions, enriching the cultural tapestry of the museum. The temporary exhibitions provide fresh perspectives and continuously engage visitors with new and exciting displays.

The MAS Collection

The museum’s collection is a treasure trove of art and artifacts that reflect Antwerp’s rich maritime history and its global connections. Highlights include the Sarvavid Vairocana Buddhist paintings from the 18th century, recognized as Flemish masterpieces, and an impressive array of European folk prints. The collection also features an extensive array of ship models and the largest collection of harbor cranes in Europe.

In addition to its own collection, the MAS manages the Paul and Dora Janssen-Arts Collection of Pre-Columbian art, further enhancing its diverse offerings. All these collections are accessible online, allowing a global audience to explore the museum’s treasures.

Interactive Experiences

Engaging younger audiences is a priority for the MAS, and the museum’s youth team, MAS in Jonge Handen, plays a crucial role in this endeavor. This group of young enthusiasts organizes events and activities tailored for a younger audience, including the popular MASKED event. They also developed the MASup app, which offers six unique tours through the museum, making the experience interactive and fun for younger visitors.

The Museum Square and Art Installations

In front of the MAS lies the Museum Square, featuring the striking mosaic ‘Dead Skull’ by Luc Tuymans. This 1,600 square meter artwork comprises nearly 100,000 stones in various shades, creating a compelling visual experience. The mosaic is inspired by a plaque dedicated to the Antwerp painter Quinten Metsys, adding a layer of historical significance to the modern artwork.

Another notable installation is the ‘Saluting Admiral Couple’ by Guillaume Bijl, located on the eighth floor. This sculpture, inspired by the bustling maritime environment, adds a whimsical touch to the museum’s exterior.

The Birth of MAS

The idea for the MAS was conceived in 1998, with the aim of creating a new museum dedicated to the city’s maritime heritage. The winning design by Neutelings Riedijk Architects was selected from an international competition, and construction began in 2007. By 2011, the museum was ready to open its doors, following a meticulous process of collecting and curating over 460,000 artifacts.

Today, the Museum aan de Stroom is more than just a museum; it is a cultural landmark that celebrates Antwerp’s rich history and its enduring connection to the world. Whether you’re an art aficionado, a history buff, or simply a curious traveler, the MAS promises an unforgettable journey through time and across the globe.
