Altstädtisches Rathaus

Altstädtisches Rathaus Brandenburg an der Havel

Altstädtisches Rathaus

In the heart of Brandenburg an der Havel, the Altstädtisches Rathaus stands as a testament to the architectural and historical richness of the region. This stunning example of late medieval Brick Gothic architecture invites visitors to explore its storied past and intricate design. Whether you're a history buff or an architecture enthusiast, the Rathaus offers a fascinating journey back in time.

The Historical Tapestry of Altstädtisches Rathaus

The origins of the Altstädtisches Rathaus can be traced back to around 1290 when the first town hall was established at the Altstädtischer Markt. Initially, it comprised a masonry cellar and a wooden hall. By 1430, a two-story extension was added, featuring vaulted ceilings and decorative circular and heraldic motifs, serving as council and writing rooms.

In 1468, the wooden structure was replaced by the red brick building we see today. The architect remains unknown, but the craftsmanship bears similarities to other structures in cities like Ziesar and Tangermünde. The influence of the belfries in Belgium and the Netherlands is evident, reflecting the trade connections between Brandenburg and Bruges in the 15th century. Originally, the tower was two stories shorter, crowned with a pyramid roof, and housed a market hall, council chamber, prison, and armory.

Architectural Marvels and Design

The Rathaus's north-south orientation and dimensions of 33.8 by 11.5 meters create a commanding presence. The north facade is particularly striking, with its stepped portal featuring two doors adorned with medallions of human faces. The stepped gable is divided by nine pointed arches, each topped with a circular arch.

The east and west facades are more understated, highlighted by pointed arch windows and horizontal friezes. The south side features another stepped gable, interrupted by a semi-recessed tower. This tower, with its intricate design and lantern top crowned by a weather vane, stands as a unique architectural feature.

The Roland Statue

Standing proudly in front of the Rathaus is the Roland statue, a symbol of civic liberty and independence. Created in 1474 from sandstone, the 5.33-meter tall figure is clad in armor, holding a sword aloft in his right hand. Legend has it that the statue was once protected from lightning by a plant called Donnerkraut, grown in a small hollow on its head.

Originally located in the Neustadt, the statue was moved to its current location in 1946 after the destruction of the Neustadt Rathaus during World War II. The Roland statue continues to embody the spirit of the city's historical autonomy.

Inside the Rathaus: The Council Hall

The medieval council hall was a venue for council meetings, homage ceremonies, and patrician festivities. During renovations in the early 21st century, evidence suggested the presence of seating along the hall's front and an honorary seat along the side. The hall's floor was approximately 0.8 meters higher than it is today.

The grand ballroom, as it exists now, is the result of extensive renovations in the early 20th century. The room, once flat-ceiled, was elevated into the attic with a wooden barrel vault, topped with a painted coffered ceiling. This ceiling was covered in 1962 but was uncovered during the 21st-century restorations. Stained glass windows depicting medieval coats of arms add to the hall's historical ambiance.

Revitalization and Modern Use

After a period of neglect, the Altstädtisches Rathaus was purchased by the city in 1910 to prevent its demolition. Comprehensive restoration followed, including the removal of white plaster from the facades and the addition of a connecting building to the Ordonnanzhaus. Since then, the Rathaus has served as a festive hall, with the Ratskeller operating as a restaurant in the basement.

Following the destruction of the Neustädtisches Rathaus in World War II, the Altstädtisches Rathaus became a venue for city council meetings. In 2006-2007, further renovations restored the building as the central seat of the city's administration, including the office of the mayor.

Today, the Altstädtisches Rathaus stands as a vibrant symbol of Brandenburg an der Havel's rich history and architectural heritage. Its walls echo the stories of a bygone era, inviting visitors to explore the fascinating interplay of history and design that defines this remarkable building.
