Heilandskirche Dornbirn

Heilandskirche Dornbirn Dornbirn

Heilandskirche Dornbirn

Hidden in the charming town of Dornbirn, Austria, the Heilandskirche Dornbirn stands as a testament to both architectural beauty and historical significance. This Evangelical Reformed church is not only a place of worship but also a symbol of the town's rich cultural heritage. With its unique design and storied past, the Heilandskirche Dornbirn offers visitors an intriguing glimpse into the spiritual and communal life of the region.

The Origins and Construction of Heilandskirche Dornbirn

The roots of Heilandskirche Dornbirn trace back to the early 20th century. The Evangelical community in Vorarlberg, seeking a dedicated place for worship, established a preaching station in 1907. This humble beginning laid the foundation for what would become a significant religious site. By 1951, the community had grown and was recognized as an independent parish.

The church’s construction was spearheaded by Helmuth Pommer, a pastor from Bregenz. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on May 11, 1930, and the church was consecrated less than a year later, on April 19, 1931. The architectural plans for the church were provided by the Evangelical community in Schenkenhan, Bohemia (now Tesařov, part of the municipality of Kořenov). This connection is evident in the church’s design, which mirrors the Bergkirche Schenkenhan, also built under Pommer’s guidance in 1909.

Architectural Highlights

The Heilandskirche Dornbirn is an architectural gem, characterized by its simple yet elegant structure. The church features an octagonal main hall with a gallery and a tent roof topped with a lantern. This distinctive design is complemented by four semi-circular annexes that serve various purposes: an entrance porch, two staircases, and a choir area that doubles as a sacristy.

The church’s windows, crafted by the renowned Innsbruck Glass Painting Company in Tirol, add a touch of artistic flair. Inside, the focal point is a crucifix created by Hans Wissel, which serves as a powerful symbol of faith and devotion. The entire construction cost approximately 85,000 schillings, which, adjusted for inflation, would be around 299,000 euros today.

A Community United in Faith

The Heilandskirche Dornbirn is part of a unique religious landscape. All four Evangelical parishes in Vorarlberg belong to the Reformed Evangelical Church H.B. However, these parishes also include individuals who are members of the Lutheran Evangelical Church A.B. This mixed-confessional structure reflects the inclusive nature of the community.

In Dornbirn, there are more individuals affiliated with the Lutheran Church than the Reformed Church. This led to the so-called Dornbirn Dispute in the 1950s, where there was a proposal to transfer the Dornbirn parish to the Lutheran Church. Despite this, the parish remained part of the Reformed Church, illustrating the complexities and dynamics of religious affiliation in the region.

The Church Organ and Modern Renovations

Music has always been an integral part of worship at Heilandskirche Dornbirn. The original organ, installed in 1931, was built by the Mayer Brothers Organ Company. In 2004, this was replaced by a new two-manual organ with ten registers, crafted by Rieger Orgelbau. This modern instrument continues to fill the church with beautiful music, enhancing the spiritual experience for all who attend services.

Between 2003 and 2004, the church underwent a comprehensive renovation. During this period, the traditional pews were replaced with free-standing chairs, allowing for a more flexible and inclusive seating arrangement. In 2018, the lighting fixtures in the tent roof were updated to energy-efficient LED lights, designed to match the original 1931 fixtures. These renovations ensure that the church remains a comfortable and welcoming space for worshippers and visitors alike.
