Eastern Beach in Geelong, Victoria, is a stunning coastal gem that has been captivating visitors for decades. Nestled on the shores of Corio Bay, this iconic beach is a delightful blend of natural beauty and historical charm, making it a must-visit destination for tourists and locals alike. Whether you're looking to relax by the water, take a refreshing dip, or simply soak in the picturesque surroundings, Eastern Beach has something for everyone.
Eastern Beach wasn't always the serene haven it is today. In the early 20th century, the area was considered an unsightly part of Geelong, characterized by steep cliffs that ran from the northern boundary of the town to the shores of Corio Bay. The transformation of Eastern Beach began in 1914 when the City of Geelong proposed an ambitious redevelopment plan. The plan included the construction of a one-mile sea wall, land reclamation, and the flattening of the cliffs along the beach.
The redevelopment work commenced in September 1927, with J.C. Taylor and Sons being the successful contractors for the project. The first stage of the works, which included the construction of a concrete stairway, terraces, and dressing sheds, was officially opened on December 20, 1929, by the Mayor of Geelong, Cr Solomon Jacobs. The semi-circular shark-proof swimming enclosure and children's pool were later opened on March 28, 1939, also by Cr Jacobs. This enclosure, covering 8.5 acres and capable of accommodating 10,000 bathers, was a significant investment in the city's future.
Today, Eastern Beach is a vibrant and bustling hub of activity. The beach offers a variety of amenities and attractions that cater to visitors of all ages. The shark-proof sea bath is a standout feature, providing a safe and enjoyable swimming experience for beachgoers. The children's swimming pool is perfect for families with young kids, offering a shallow and secure area for little ones to splash around.
One of the most charming aspects of Eastern Beach is its Art Deco architecture. The kiosk and dressing room pavilion are notable examples of this style and are listed on the Victorian Heritage Register. These beautifully preserved buildings add a touch of nostalgia to the beach, transporting visitors back to the 1930s when Eastern Beach was first developed.
Eastern Beach is not just about swimming and sunbathing; it also offers a range of activities and attractions to keep visitors entertained. The beach is a popular spot for festivals and concerts, with events like the annual Geelong Carols by the Bay concert drawing large crowds. The boardwalk around the swimming enclosure is a delightful place for a leisurely stroll, offering stunning views of Corio Bay and the surrounding area.
For those who enjoy dining with a view, the Beach House restaurant located on the upper level of the kiosk building is a must-visit. This restaurant offers delicious meals and refreshments, making it the perfect spot to relax and unwind after a day of beach activities.
In the 1960s, Eastern Beach began to experience a decline in popularity due to the rise of motor car ownership, which made it easier for Geelong residents to access ocean beaches. This decline continued for several decades, with the area falling into disrepair. However, in 1993, the City of Greater Geelong announced plans for the restoration of Eastern Beach. Partial funding for the restoration came from the community, with people given the opportunity to purchase a plank on the boardwalk around the swimming enclosure.
The restoration project was a resounding success, with the boardwalk and enclosure being rebuilt, and the children's swimming pool, kiosk, and change rooms renovated. The original diving tower, a beloved feature of the beach, was also reinstated in the late 1990s, albeit with some alterations to the design for safety reasons.
Eastern Beach is a true testament to the enduring appeal of Geelong's coastal beauty. Its rich history, stunning Art Deco architecture, and array of amenities make it a beloved destination for both locals and tourists. Whether you're looking to take a dip in the shark-proof sea bath, enjoy a meal with a view, or simply relax on the sandy shores, Eastern Beach offers a quintessential beach experience that is sure to leave you with lasting memories. So, pack your sunscreen, grab your beach towel, and head to Eastern Beach for a day of fun, relaxation, and adventure by the bay.
