The foundation stone of the convent church was laid in 1344, a testament to the city's appreciation for the Beguines, who served as invaluable caregivers and attendants to the deceased. This small hall church, crafted in the Gothic style, features a square choir and a west tower, reflecting the architectural sensibilities of its time.

As the Reformation swept through Europe, the religious landscape of Landau shifted dramatically. By 1526, the city council noted the dwindling presence of the Beguines, and the convent eventually dissolved. The chapel found a new purpose, serving as a funeral chapel during the harsh winter months from the mid-17th century onward.

Transformation Under French Influence

In 1680, Landau came under French control, and the Katharinenkapelle was repurposed as a garrison church. The French made significant architectural modifications, dividing the nave with arcades to create a central aisle flanked by two side aisles. The northern and southern walls of the choir were extended eastward, and the buttresses were removed to create additional storage and sacristy spaces.

The chapel's role evolved once again during the War of the Spanish Succession, when it became a shared place of worship for Catholics and Lutherans between 1702 and 1704. The eastern ends of the side aisles house the ornate tombs of two imperial officers, including General Hartmann Samuel Hoffmann von Löwenfeld, buried in the early 18th century.

A Journey Through Time: Secularization and Restoration

The 18th century saw the secularization of the chapel, which was transformed into a municipal powder magazine, a prison, and eventually a hay storage facility. In 1791, a wine merchant acquired the building for use as a warehouse. By 1847, the dilapidated chapel was considered an eyesore, and plans for its demolition were discussed. Fortunately, the city repurchased the chapel, converting it into a market hall and adding large entrances, one of which remains on the north side today.

The historic tower was dismantled, and a small apartment was constructed in the attic for a city supervisor. The choir was raised in the neo-Gothic style, featuring a low, three-part pointed arch window facing east.

Revival as a Place of Worship

In 1872, the Landau city council decided to restore the Katharinenkapelle as a church, entrusting it to the newly founded Old Catholic community. A new bell tower was erected during this restoration, and since 1960, the Independent Evangelical-Lutheran Church (SELK) has also used the chapel for worship.

The Murals: A Window into the Past

During renovations from 1958 to 1960, a series of wall paintings from the church's construction period were uncovered in the choir. These murals, depicting a Passion cycle from the late 14th century, sparked controversy due to the portrayal of Jewish figures as tormentors of Jesus. Despite debates over their removal, the paintings were preserved, and copies of the contentious images were included in the Anne Frank House's permanent exhibition on antisemitism in Amsterdam, as well as in Berlin's House of the Wannsee Conference.

In 1961, restorer Arthur Kalbhenn added a crucifixion scene with Mary and John above the choir's triumphal arch, inspired by a book illumination. The authenticity of this depiction remains uncertain, but it adds a unique layer to the chapel's artistic heritage.
