Hort del Rei, nestled in the heart of Palma de Mallorca, is a captivating oasis that beckons visitors with its lush greenery and historical charm. Situated between the majestic Almudaina Palace and the bustling avenue of Antoni Maura, this garden is a serene escape from the city's lively streets, offering a glimpse into Mallorca's rich past and natural beauty.
The origins of Hort del Rei trace back to a time when it was an integral part of the Royal Palace of Almudaina. Historically, the garden was a thriving space filled with fruit trees, vegetables, medicinal herbs, and ornamental plants, earning its name as the King's Garden. Enclosed by a high wall, it was a secluded sanctuary, bordered by the Cavalry Quarters to the sea and the gardener's house to the north.
In the mid-19th century, the landscape began to change. The construction of the Conqueridor Street in 1847 marked the beginning of urban development in the area. The garden's boundaries were altered to accommodate new roads, and the original wall was replaced first by a wooden fence and later by an iron one. By the early 20th century, the garden had all but disappeared, replaced by various buildings, including the Lyrical Theatre and the Alhambra Hotel.
The 1960s brought a new vision for Hort del Rei. Architect Gabriel Alomar i Esteve, inspired by the water features and plantings of Arab gardens, proposed a restoration plan as part of his broader vision for Palma's urban renewal. The demolition of existing structures, including the iconic Lyrical Theatre, paved the way for the creation of the current gardens. Alomar, along with Francisco Prieto-Moreno, designed the space without charging fees, focusing on highlighting Palma’s architectural heritage. The project, completed in 1966, cost 25 million pesetas and aimed to enhance the historical allure of the Almudaina and nearby landmarks.

Today, Hort del Rei is a delightful blend of history and nature. The most striking feature is the arch of the royal shipyards, believed to be of Arab origin. This arch gracefully spans the swan pond, evoking the garden's historical connection to the sea, where ships once awaited their royal passengers.
Wandering through the garden, visitors are greeted by a series of enchanting sculptures. One notable piece is El Foner, a bronze sculpture by Llorenç Rosselló, depicting the legendary Balearic slingers from the Punic Wars. Another captivating work is Jònica by Josep Maria Subirachs, a marble sculpture that elegantly merges the form of a woman with the architectural elements of a Ionic column. Nancy by Alexander Calder adds a modern touch, its stabile-mobile design interacting playfully with the surrounding air.
Hort del Rei offers a peaceful retreat where the hustle and bustle of Palma seem worlds away. The gentle sound of water flowing through fountains and the rustle of palm leaves create a soothing ambiance. Benches tucked along paths invite visitors to pause and soak in the tranquility, while the garden's layout encourages leisurely exploration.
