Josaphat Park

Josaphat Park Schaerbeek

Josaphat Park

Josaphat Park, nestled in the heart of Schaerbeek, Belgium, is an enchanting green oasis that spans over 20 hectares. This picturesque park, known locally as Josaphatpark, offers visitors a delightful escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Designed by the renowned landscape architect Edmond Galoppin in 1904, Josaphat Park is a testament to the harmonious blend of natural beauty and thoughtful design.

The History of Josaphat Park

The origins of Josaphat Park trace back to a valley carved by a tributary of the Maelbeek, known as the Josaphat stream, formerly called Roodenbeek. According to tradition, the park's name was inspired by a pilgrim returning from the Holy Land who was struck by the resemblance between this Schaerbeek valley and the biblical Valley of Josaphat near Jerusalem. In 1574, this pilgrim erected a votive column at a place called Heyligenberg, inviting passersby to reflect on this similarity. Although the column was destroyed during the French Revolution, the name Josaphat endured.

In the 19th century, the valley became a popular promenade for city dwellers who enjoyed cheese sandwiches and local beers in the converted farmhouses. In 1901, the municipality of Schaerbeek decided to transform the area into a park, acquiring land from 197 owners. Despite some resistance, notably from a widow named Martha, the park was eventually established and opened to the public in 1904, initially covering four hectares. Over time, it expanded to its current size of 20 hectares.
