Erlöserkirche

In the heart of Detmold, a charming town in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, stands the Erlöserkirche, a masterpiece of late Gothic architecture and a beacon of the town's rich history. Known also as the Market Church, this formidable structure is the only medieval building in Detmold that has remained almost unchanged through the centuries. Its towering presence and historical significance make it a must-visit for anyone exploring this picturesque region.

The History of Erlöserkirche

The origins of the Erlöserkirche date back to around 800 AD, when it was originally known as the Vitus Church. It served as the mother church of the Theotmalli district, with remnants of a 10th-century tower still embedded within its western wall. By the 13th century, it had become part of the Archdeaconry of Paderborn, later gaining independence and eventually joining the Archdeaconry of Lemgo.

The church's prominence grew significantly in 1511 when the Lords of Lippe moved their main residence to Detmold, making the church a key location for worship. The transition from Catholicism to Lutheranism occurred in 1536 under Simon von Exter, followed by the adoption of Calvinism in 1605, which has shaped the church's identity ever since.

After a devastating town fire in 1547, the church was rebuilt in its current Gothic style. The south tower, constructed between 1564 and 1592, features a Renaissance helm added in 1592. The church was officially named Erlöserkirche in 1947, reflecting its enduring role as the spiritual heart of Detmold's reformed community.

Architectural Marvels

The Erlöserkirche is a three-aisled hall church typical of Westphalian Gothic architecture. Its rectangular choir faces east, while the impressive four-story tower rises to a height of 46 meters. The tower's robust base and Gothic cornices enhance its majestic appearance, making it a striking feature of Detmold's skyline.

Inside, the church is a testament to Calvinist simplicity. The interior, measuring 24.7 meters wide and 18 meters long, is dominated by two massive pillars that support the vaulted ceiling. The space is divided into three bays from west to east, with additional bays to the north and south, each adorned with intricately designed keystones.

Artistic and Historical Treasures

The church's windows, with their late Gothic pointed arches, resemble four-leaf clovers in their upper sections. The newest window, a gift from the last reigning Prince Leopold IV, is located on the north side, bearing an inscription that highlights its significance.

A highlight within the church is the baptismal font from 1579, crafted in the form of a chalice and adorned with a leaf motif. Its twisted fluting and brass basin, inscribed in Low German, add to its historical charm. The ebony-colored Baroque pulpit, dating from the late 17th century, stands on a simple round column, topped with a hexagonal soundboard.

In the tower room, visitors can find two epitaphs commemorating old Lippe noble families. The epitaph of Margarete von Schwarz, featuring the family crests of Schwarz and Kerssenbrock, is a dark-toned masterpiece likely crafted by the Lemgo master Hermann Wulff. The second epitaph honors Anna von Zerssen and her family, richly adorned with heraldic symbols.

The Organ and Bells

The church's west gallery houses a splendid organ with a richly articulated late Baroque facade, built by Johann-Markus Oestreich in 1795. Renovated and expanded in 1962, the organ now boasts 40 registers across three manuals and pedal, offering a mechanical marvel for music enthusiasts.

Among the church's bells, the oldest is the Fire Bell, cast in 1568 by Hans Rabe. Remarkably, it survived both World Wars and remains a resonant symbol of the town's resilience. In 2005, a new Peace Bell was added, cast by the Rincker bell foundry, weighing 1,200 kilograms and tuned to the note F.
