First and Second War Patrols

The USS Flasher embarked on her first war patrol on January 6, 1944, setting sail from Pearl Harbor. Her early missions were marked by significant successes, including the sinking of the former gunboat Yoshida Maru and the freighter Taishin Maru. By the end of her first patrol, she had already made a notable impact, sinking multiple enemy vessels and contributing to the Allied war effort.

Her second patrol took her to the coast of French Indochina, where she continued to demonstrate her prowess. Notable victories during this patrol included the sinking of the French aviso Tahure and the large cargo ship Teisen Maru. Each successful mission added to her growing reputation as a formidable force in the Pacific.

Third and Fourth War Patrols

During her third patrol, the USS Flasher operated in the South China Sea, where she faced heavily escorted convoys. Despite the dangers, she managed to sink several significant targets, including the freighter Nippo Maru and the cruiser Ōi. Her ability to evade depth charge retaliations and continue her attacks showcased the skill and bravery of her crew.

The fourth patrol saw the Flasher leading a coordinated attack group in the Philippines. This patrol was marked by the sinking of three ships, including the former light cruiser Saigon Maru and the transport and hospital ship Ural Maru. Fifth and Sixth War Patrols

Under the command of Lieutenant Commander George W. Grider, the USS Flasher embarked on her fifth war patrol in November 1944. This patrol was highlighted by the sinking of the destroyers Kishinami and Iwanami, as well as the tanker Hakko Maru. The Flasher's ability to engage and destroy multiple targets in a single patrol was a testament to her strategic importance.

Her sixth patrol, conducted along the coast of Indochina, was less eventful but still demonstrated her effectiveness. The sinking of a sea truck and a cargo ship added to her impressive tally of enemy vessels destroyed. By the end of this patrol, the USS Flasher had firmly established herself as a key player in the Pacific Theater.

Post-War Legacy

As World War II came to a close, the USS Flasher was ordered back to New London, Connecticut. She was decommissioned on March 16, 1946, and placed in reserve. Although her active service had ended, her legacy lived on. In 1959, she was struck from the Naval Vessel Register, and in 1963, she was sold for scrap. However, her conning tower was preserved and placed on display as a memorial in Groton, Connecticut.

A Living Memorial

Today, the conning tower of the USS Flasher stands proudly at the intersection of Thames Street and Bridge Street in Groton.
