The foundation stone was laid on October 10, 1877, and construction continued until the final stone was placed on July 25, 1879. By August 3, 1880, the building was officially inaugurated, opening its doors to the Alameda and the burgeoning bourgeois neighborhood that emerged following the demolition of the city walls in 1855. This architectural marvel earned Sesmero the prestigious Cross of the Royal Order of Charles III in 1880. The newly inaugurated building even hosted part of the Regional Exhibition of Galicia that same year.
